Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

Our 5 month old male goldendoodle puppy invariably wants to mount practically every dog he meets! Girl dogs, boy dogs, he doesn't care! He gets so crazy, happy to see, & play, with the other dogs, it practically sends him to a frenzy!! But he actually started the behavior really early on, like around nine -ten weeks old!! At the time, the vet said it was all about dominance, but now, I'm not so sure. At puppy school, he is the only dog trying to initiate this behavior. I immediately get him to stop, but honestly, it's really embarrassing!! We'll be having him neutered next month, but I've heard sometimes that stops the behavior, and sometimes, not. Anyone else dealing with this??

Hi Liza, We have our 8 month old pup doing the same...he is neutered now and it did settle a bit, but because he has his sister here with him, he does it to her when they play. It's usually a daily ritual. We hope he calms down too...I am a little embarrassed to take him back to the dog park because he did this to all the dogs! But now that he's neutered, we'll try again. We are also spraying him with water (water bottle) when we catch him doing it and he stops immediately.
Let me know how it goes.
Rosco was like this at the same age. His first time at the dog park it seemed like his mission in life was to hump every dog there.

Yup...he WAS 5 months in that photo!
It was particularly funny when he tried that with a basset hound that was barely a few inches off the ground. He had been recently neutered at the time.

Because other dogs can easily find humping offensive I have ALWAYS put a stop to it by pulling Rosco off. Thankfully with time, as his hormones wore off he quit humping stranger dogs. However, every single night he continues to happily hump Thule (our other doodle) after dark. Don't know what it is, but it is like clockwork. We've gone back and forth on the issue with Thule. She almost never seems to mind and just continues doing what she's doing while he's humping away. But if he does it in front of us we call him on it and he stops--LOL...his hips keep moving though for a few seconds after even after he unmounts.

So I would correct and stop it with dogs that don't live with you, but with dogs in your pack (if you should have more) it's sort of a toss-up. If it doesn't cause problems...it doesn't cause problems.
Well I'm glad P isn't the only one...luckily no dog parks to worry about this yet. LOL
Oh I should add. One of my dog park friends has a lab that they waited a while to neuter...thinking they'd stud him out for one litter. Well we worked and worked on them to change their minds and eventually at about 10 months they finally neutered him...YAY! He was a supercharged humper...he''d mount any dog he could. Now that he's been neutered for many months, even though the neutering was done a bit late, the mounting has really subsided noticeably! So chances are that once your little goldendoodle gets neutered, his mounting will decrease as well. Let us know how it turns out!
What about a girl dog that humps every dog she encounters? Cealeach "does that nasty girly thing", my husbands tongue-in-cheek description, to every large dog that she encounters. It is embarrassing because, inevitably someone will ask if we are sure she's a girl. LOL
I am totally feeling better about this now! Thank you all for sharing! I'm making that neutering appointment this week!
Besides having doodles we also have great pyrs. One of the things we have done with our male pyr is to straddle him and then stand over him in the way. He soon learn that it was not ok to hump every dog that walk by him.
So far Barney is only humping his blanket. You know he likes it but he has no idea why. Believe me we will be neutering him when he's 6 months old.
Oh dear! I hope hope hope Kachi doesn't take after that Standard Poodle!!
