Hello, I live in the Richmond, VA area and I have been trying to find Goldendoodles within my price range. I am willing to travel out of state if need be, but I have looked online as well as in the paper and it seems the price of most Goldendoodles are $1000 or more. That is just too pricey for a family starting out which is a shame since I have heard only good things about Goldendoodles.
Do any of you out there know of some place I may have missed or any breeders who have more reasonable prices?
put in your application at Idog. It is a doodle rescue group and their prices are anywhere from 250 to 350 from what i have seen. Maybe sometimes a little more. But I warn you, you must be patient because I think there is a waiting list most of the time. Especially for the "cute" doods that pop up. You can also look under poomix rescue and there will be adoptable doodles on that web site also.
Your BEST bet if price is an issue is to go the rescue route: http://idog.biz/IDOGRRR.html is the main rescue/foster organization for the nation. Also place applications with local rescue groups and search for "standard poodle" in petfinder.com, goldendoodle in Craigslist, and the newspaper for people trying to find new homes for their doodle.
Here's why I suggest the above. Doodle prices are high--just what it is. The breeders with good repuations, who are ethical in their breeding programs, who do health testing, offer realistic health guarantees...all these breeders DO charge $1000 and above (most more). There are a few exceptions, but in general you will be hard-pressed to find a dog from a good breeder that goes for less. And you DO NOT want to buy a dog from a less than responsible breeder---so many problems there it's not funny. Again, there are a FEW exceptions, but not too many. Occasionally a breeder will have an older pup or retiring dog that goes for less or a breeder may be independently wealthy and simply breed for fun and sell doodles for a bit less. Not too common though.
Please read this article on "What to Look for In a Breeder" and take the recommendations seriously. BE SURE any breeder you choose does health testing on the parent dogs and you can get PROOF of this. BE SURE they give a good health guarantee. Anyone can breed two dogs, but it takes a responsible person to do all they can do to increase the chances of healthy pups with good temperaments while preventing the problem of their puppies EVER ending up in a shelter to become someone else's issue.
Myself and several others I know have found our puppies using puppyfind.com. However, you definitely need to be very diligent when checking out these breeders. Don't be afraid to ask lots of questions, ask for references, ask for their vets phone number so you can verify care and their living conditions, etc...A lot of the prices tend to be more affordable but definitely trust your instincts and do as much research as possible.
Hi Patrick, for looking for a rescue doodle there is also The Doodle Rescue & Resource Collective. The PooMix and IDog listings are there along with Petfinder listings in one place. doodlerescuecollective.com
Hi Patrick, I am looking for a doodle as well, and I can vouch for The Doodle Recue and Resource Collective (whew, that is a mouthful! DRRC is better!). They have all the listings and some great looking dogs in need of a good home! Good luck on your search!
Have you tried Old Mill Doodles in Staunton, VA? She just had 2 litters on 4/1 and the pictures are on the website. My golden doodle came from Old Mill and he is great!!!! In fact, he just celebrated his first birthday yesterday.
Hey Everyone just wanted to keep you posted - My wife found a labradoodle breeder in Farmville who had the most adorable puppies. We brought home a 12 week old labradoodled and named her Buffy. We have updated the account and posted pictures. Thank you everyone for your help and we are now proud doodle owners :)
