Now that spring is in full swing and the grass is growing Sadie has returned to her cow--like grazing habits. She especially loves to snack on the high blades that our edger just misses. Yesterday we were at the dog park for a little bit and she even took a break from playing to eat the grass there.
I know that it doesn't really hurt her, other than making her throw up if she eats way too much, but it is so bizarre. I feel like there is some vitamin or nutrient that she isn't getting and that is why she is eating the grass. Maybe I'm over analyzing and she just likes the taste.
I think that there is a special type of grass that only grows in the spring, that they especially like to eat. Don;t remember who, but someone I trusted told me it is especially sweet tasting. Beau only eats grass in the spring, and since we live in South Florida, he could conceivably eat grass all year long, if he wanted to.
Mazie eats grass, as well as dirt (much to my horror.) Sometimes she throws up, usually she doesn't, depending on which one of us is supervising her. She tends to listen to John more, so he'll yell at her and she'll toss her head like an impudent child, but she'll stop. With me, she is so naughty. She digs, eats grass and dirt, runs around and sometimes forgets to pee. I figure she wouldn't eat the grass if she didn't like it, and it doesn't have fertilizer on it, so I'm not going to stress about it. The dirt-eating drives me nuts, though, because she comes in and immediately turns her water bowl to mud from all the dirt on her tongue. It's one of those giant water-cooler thingies, so I can't even lift it to wash it out. I end up trying (unsuccessfully) to sift the dirt out with paper towels and waiting til John gets home so he can change it AGAIN.
Both of mine like to eat grass ocassionally but Lily especially loves it when has grown long and is freshly cut. I wish I had taken a picture of her recently when she had done this, her whole beard and even up around her nose was green!
Yes I just noticed this lately. We walk in a highly grassed (wild) area, and of course it is growing like crazy now. A couple of times they have actually thrown up right after while still on our walks. It kind of freaked me out so I have been discouraging it, but I feel better now knowing it's quite normal. Thanks!
