Kachi (5 months old)has just discovered the fun of ripping open his stuffed toys to find the prize inside...the squeaker!! Just today, busy bee, alligator & his striped pony (the one he has in his mouth on our profile pic) met untimely deaths. So sad.
Will he out grow this, or does this mean we're destined for only hard rubber toys from here on out? Is there any way to curb this behavior?
You might also try this Hide-a-bee or similar toys. The goal is to take the bees out of the log so it might make Kachi feel like he's destroying without actually...destroying: Hide a Bee
I actually had heard about this toy & found it in a pet store at the coast. It was kind of expensive there, so I didn't purchase it. But next time I go over, I'm going to get it. I like the idea of it. Now that he has figured out that it's fun to pull them a toy apart, it'll be worth it. I bought Kachi a toy awhile back that sounded like it had crinkly plastic in it for the same reason. It makes him think he's playing with something he shouldn't!!
Here is a link to some prtty tough dog toys. I have had good luck with the ring. They have a toughness rating factor and 10 (or so I was told) is the one they give to lions to play with.
Recently at a pet show I came across a braid of sherpa about 3 ft long with knots at either end. It has miraculously held up completely for nearly 2 weeks with 10 dogs in the house (6 puppies). The other day at walmart I bought 2 yards of fleece for $4 to make additional braids as we have gotten them at petsmart made out of fleece AND they cost about $4 each. I have long said I was just going to go get the fleecy or furry fabric and let them have at it. The good news it is usually a phase. Keep us posted how it goes : )
Gus used to do that to all his stuffed animals. You would think we had a serial killer in our back yard. Small body parts everywhere. Though he hasn't done it for a while now. I think having Lilly around changed it. They don't have time for stuffed toys.
Finny has destroyed all soft toys - bar one; 'Skinny Rabbit'. It's a long soft, silky. It has no stuffing. It had squeakys in it originally, but once he ripped the *@*# out of Skinny Rabbit, we cut out the squeakys. Skinny Rabbit has a humongous and unsightly hole where his rear end used to be, looks like he's been disembowled, but that doesn't worry Finn. Skinny Rabbit was the first ever toy we bought for Finn; got it before he arrived...it was waiting for him. Today, we still play tug with it's remains and I drag Finny all around the house!
(PS. Skinnys come in skunk too, and something else indescribable).
That is funny!!! Please tell me you have a picture you can share of Skinny 'the disemboweled' Rabbit! I would love to see it! In fact, it would be fun to see all of our doodle's rattiest looking softees! "Adina, Are you there?"
We are in the group of no more stuffed toys or ropes, Macy used to LOVE them but after learning to gut them she now destroys them in seconds. I was hoping she would outgrow and at 19 months, I'm still waiting. I hope you have better luck with Kachi. l
We've found alternatives, such as real bones, nylabones, hurleys, kongs, kong bouncers, kong balls and plastic no fuzz chuck-it balls. I buy from sitstay.com they have great prices and customer service. They also have lots of the puzzler type toys, Adina mentioned.
Sadly, every beloved stuffed toy has had it's last day here in our house. Blue puppy, red buddy, bo-bo, horsey, etc.....
