Doodles Ingesting Chocolate: Dalai ate a dozen chocolate/peanut butter chip cookies last night. I called the emergency vet and they told me to induce vomiting by using 2 tbsp. hydrogen peroxide, and after her stomach was empty to bring her in. I did just that and they kept her overnight to give charcoal (to absorb the toxins) and put her on i.v. fluids. I will be picking her up in a couple of hours. As far as I know she is fine. I know she had increased respirations and hyperactivity before calling the vet, but of course after everything is fine I wonder if I overreacted. The bill was $527.
'back in the day', before the internet and much wisdome being shared - I gave my dogs frozen grapes as summer treats with no toxic reactions. - lucky, I guess. Just with 'side effects'of medicines, if one person has a negavie reaction it must be reported. Not all dogs get sick from chocolate, onions or grapes but you just never know.
I would have done the same exact thing. You just never know what your pup will react too. You can never be too safe when it comes to the health of our loved one.
This is a prime example of why you should consider health insurance. I wen with PetPlan. My cost is $235.00/year. I choose the Silver Plan - $200.00 deductible per incident per year and they pay 100%. I hope that because i paid for the insurance it will mean we will never have to use it! It does not pay for the routine stuff - just emergencies.
Please keep us posted on how Dalai is!!
Puppy hugs sent your way!!
You absolutely did not overreact. Increased respiration and hyperactivity are symptoms of a critical condition that needs immediate emergency care. I don't think one of us would have done any differently than you did.
The $527 is rough, but sometimes that's what it takes to wake us up to a situation that can be deadly for our dogs. I once forgot to check both gates in my yard before letting Jack out; of course, that was the day he saw another dog across the street, and ran out in front of a car! By the grace of God, the driver saw him and stopped in time. But you can bet I never open the back door without checking those gates now! I'll bet nobody will leave cookies within Dalai's reach again, either!
I hope Dalai makes a full recovery and is back to her usual self soon! Hugs to you both!
Thanks for the hugs! Dalai is now home, but getting small amounts of water and mini bland meals. She looks so sad with a charcoal beard! Her one leg is shaved down to the skin where the i.v. was placed (she has one poodle leg). It is hard staying on top of everybody. I have two kids home from college for the summer. Dalai was in the yard with Dave and my daughter baked cookies and thought she could take a shower where the cookies were cooling. Dave opened the door to put dalai in the house so he could mow. The cookies were history. Thanks Adrianne for the info. on pet insurance. I will definitely look into it. I will be able to monitor dalai until I have to go back to work Tuesday night. Thanks again for replying to my ordeal.
