We left the North Pole (ok its not really where St. Nick lives - but we are neighbors lol) and drove for 2 days - destination sunny hot Okanagan. Cresting the final mountain I say to DH "look at all the black smoke there is a forest fire behind that ridge!" We come down the hill into Peachland and as we are descending the fire engines and police are zooming up the hill. - To close the highway!! We just made it in! The power was off in this town - but they got it back on 24 hrs later (yay BC Hydro!). Anyways we cant go to Kelowna which we were planning on paying a visit becaue hwy 97 is closed. Our destination was Peachland and we are safe and happy here but much of the Okanagan is on fire. Scary. We sit on the beach and watch the helicopters and water bombers fill up right infront of us. We are in smoke. It has been burning 3 days now. Hopefully it will be all contained soon and they will open the hwy. 15000 people have been displaced because of evacuation. But thank God no loss of life. Prayers and positive thoughts for the people, pets, and livestock.
Reg, you bring excitement with you wherever you go!
Sending positive thoughts to all the residents of Okanagan, 2 and 4 footed; hope things will soon be under control & you can enjoy your vacation. It will for sure be one your family never forgets! Stay safe and bring back photos, we miss you here on DK!
Well, our house is still standing. We were in Nanaimo at a wedding when we got the call...Our kids were here, aged 1.5 and 2.5 so we were panicking trying to get home in a hurry, across the ferry and a 5 hr drive we finally made it and guess what. The fire was almost out! We missed all the excitement! Not complaining.
