Anyone have any recommendations on coat length for our muggy southern summers? Harlow is already laying on air conditioning vents or sitting in front of the box fan. She is our first doodle, so we are not sure how short we should go.

You can request your groomer trim your doodle, or even shave closer like a poodle cut - but I suggest you really know what you are asking for (especially if you LOVE that shaggy coat) and work very closely and communicate to the point of very honest and bluntly telling your groomer what you want. I have experienced some crazy doodle cuts - some that I haven't been so fond of - but I think it really boils down to communication and pictures if you have those of what you want for your doodle cut. Hope this helps!
We took both of ours in and now they look like military dogs. My husband says their hair is cut high and tight! In other words really really short, but not shaved. They seem to be much more comfortable, but I don't know if even their hair being this short will keep them cool in this heat. It's too hot here in Columbia, SC!
Last summer, I had my Bella Daisy cut down for the summer and she came home looking like a poodle with a topknot : (
This year I found a picture and took it to my groomer and I think it looks more doodley. This is the picture.

I told her to clip her about 2 to 3 inches on the body, leave teddy bear legs and cut her head kinda like a bischon. Unsure if that is the way to spell it :) She seems to be cooler and still look like herself.
Thanks for the picture. We ended up having Harlow trimmed a bit shorter than your picture. Her head is definitely cut shorter and the groomer shaved the bridge of her nose. I think next time I will ask her to use thinning shears instead. I also noticed that the inside of Harlow's legs were shaved a lot more than in your picture. I am taking this picture with me the next time she goes in for a grooming.
We just had Zeke & Lily shaved, just body, I asked the groomer to leave the head from ears forward and also to leave the tail. They came home looking so funny, little bodies with big heads...lol. I trimmed their heads myself and now they look more normal. I really would have preferred not to have shaved but Lily was just too matted and Zeke was miserably hot. They both are much more comfortable and are no longer fighting over the air conditioner vents.
I have had a hard time getting my doodle's coat right...the first time the poodled him and I about died....the next time was ok but i still wasn't happy...the third time because of matting i had to have him shaved and had them leave his head long because it had taken a while for it to grown out from the poodling...when he came out i busted out laughing because he looked like a bobble head....he was so little in the body.....his hair has grown out and i like it and i am going to let them just shape up his head....although i LOVE the long rasta hair...he seems happier with it short and he is black and lives in the south....might let it grow out for winter but i am def taking a pic in with me this next time...groomers sometimes think they know how to groom a doodle bu not necessarily
