We have had our puppy, Jersey for 3 days. On the first day, he had diarrhea that was almost completely a brown liquid. On the second day, he went poopy 3 times and continued to have diarrhea but it was slightly less runny. Today, he went poopy 4 times and has the same runny diarrhea. Is this normal with moving from the breeder to our house? We have been mixing the food from the breeder into his puppy food to help transition him, but I just feel terrible to see him have diarrhea!

On a positive note, he has only has 1 accident in the house so far!

First of all...congratulations! I know that they can have loose stools at firs when they come home...the transition can be a little tough on them. How much food are you mixing and what are the foods? During a transition they can definitely have loose stools but I'm not sure about runny diarrhea...someone else may know better. Do you know if the breeder gave him a dewormer before leaving? I know some breeders will do that and that can cause runny stools. That's great that he has only had 1 accident so far...especially with diarrhea. Good luck and keep us posted.

I have also heard that they may get upset stomaches during the transition. our breeder told us that if he gets diarrhea, to try and fast him for 1 meal and see if that helps. sometimes if they are getting too much food, they will have loose stool. After that she said to try small meals of boiled chicken and rice, then slowly start going back to his regular food. So far that has helped nearly every time. Good luck and congrats on the new little guy! :)
Thanks so much for the help so far! We just came in from a potty break and Jersey had another case of light brown diarrhea. We are mixing Eukanuba (what the breeder gave us) and Purina Puppy Chow. This may be a stupid question, but does the brand of food make a huge difference?
A new pup is so exciting, but the loose stools and worry are not part of the fun. I know I read that water can also be a source of trouble when switching homes. A lot of breeders that I read about said you should use bottled water instead of tap for at least a couple of weeks. I don't like the idea of all the wasted bottles, so I used the Britta filtered water we already use for ourselves. We did that for at least a month. Good luck!
It took Peri 2 weeks once I started mixing in new foods (which was immediately) to have solid stools. The new house and environment, combined with food changes, just mess her up.
My vet gave me samples of a powder you add to their food to even out their bacteria. You can buy online too "Purina Fortiflora". It helped us get throught the transition.
If you get really worried, however, take him in to make sure it isn't something more serious.
Thanks for the tips! Jersey has been doing much better and is did a solid poop this morning. Although it is still soft, it is solid and that is improvement! Thanks so much...you guys are so helpful and we really appreciate it!
