I'm not sure but your dog looks like it would have light colored nails. In good light you should be able to see the quick as a pinkish triangle inside the nail. Then you have to be sure to clip the nail to the outside of this triangle. Also, there have been discussions on using a dremel for nail grinding which avoids the problem. You do have to be careful to avoid getting hair caught in the dremel though. Here is a website that explains the dremel process.
Dremel
most of her nails are light, but some are very dark.
Another good thing about the Dremel is if you should hit the quick it is cauterized and less painful , I think, and won't bleed. i agree with Denise you can't stay on one nail too long. If necessary you can come back to the same nails if you need more time on them.
Also, using a Dremel on the nails, which I have done, you have to be sure to move on to the next nail after just a short time - it heats up the nail pretty fast.
No, I've never used one, I didn't even know they made those. I'd be interested to hear how well they work from other people who have used them before. My dogs have all had black or dark colored nails, so we can't see the quick. We've had too many bad experiences hurting the dog and making him bleed when I've used the clippers, so we use the dremel to file instead.
After experimenting with lots of different tools for cutting nails, we think the dremel tool is the best for pups of all sizes. We use it on our 100-lb. doodles who have large nails. It works great. PetiPaws are just a form of dremel tool, more expensive, and less effective. Get a dremel and just take your time. If you never let the nails get too long, it is easier to cut them.
