Motta seems to puke up water or water and food at least once a week. Not sure why he's doing it. Tonight I know him and Miley were out playing (it's very hot out today in Virginia) for about 15 minutes, when they came in Motta drank water and laid down to eat but he chucked it all with in 15 minutes and is now just looking at me funny. I am hoping he's ok. Miley has never done this but of course they are very different even though they are littermates.
We are going for our last set of shots on Thursday and I will ask the vet then but does anyone else have any thoughts on it?
I am feeding TOTW with either cottage cheese or wellness core canned chicken over it occasionally. I also feed pieces of fruit and veggies when we have leftovers.
Hi Wendy,
Since you are going for your last set of shots on Thursday can you try and video tape this so your Vet can see what is going on. This way he can tell if your dog is actually vomiting or regurgitating his food. There are number of reason's that causes a dog to vomit or regurgatate their food, I would let you Vet figure that out.
Hi Wendy ~ I would say there is a good possibility you are already on to the issue. One of our puppy parents experienced this with her doodle for a while, several food changes and brainstorming found her concluding that by picking up the water and not allowing so much gulping the issue resolved. Because kibble takes a while to digest you may even find whole kibble hours after eating. Kibble increases in bulk in the stomach with the addition of fluid, so what made them full previously becomes too much to bear with the addition of water. Many have had a great deal of success in allowing the kibble to soak up the water so that it can enlarge prior to being within the stomach. Good luck and keep us posted!
Mickey would do the same if he ate, drank and ran around playing within 15 minutes. What came up was unchewed food. I attributed it to him eating fast and not allowing the food to actually start to digest. He grew and gained weight so I wasn't worried. I just curtailed the running around for awhile after eating.
I am very interested in hearing what your vet has to say.
It has become less, but Spud pukes at least once a day if not more. Most of the time it was after a lot of water. Our vet told us to never remove a dogs water, so we just let him work it out for himself. Most days, now he is only eating after 9pm and then he rests, so his food is finally staying down.
Peri has thrown up a few times from drinking too much water. She is hot, comes inside after a walk and drinks way too much, then throws up. I am sure Motta is fine. But ask your vet Thursday to ease your mind.
My old chow chow used to do this when he ate too quickly and drunk too much water. I am very causious about this because he ended up with Bloat, and had an emergency surgery.
I am not a vet or anything, but eating large amount too quickly is not good for them....
Bloat is what I am worried most about. I really am hoping it's a puppy thing and not a sign of what may come. My parents and sisters all raise dobermans (except for one sister who loves choc labs) and 3 of the 6 we have had in the family including my sisters old choc lab... all died of bloat. 1 more of an enlarged heart and congestive heart failure.... It's all scary stuff.
Well, we went to the vet today and she said Motta was perfectly fine. We are to try to limit how much water/food he wants when he's gulping... especially after playing and she thinks that will do it. I am hoping he's not prone to Bloat but the vet said this is probaby just a puppy thing he'd grow out of.
Oh too... He has gained 12 lbs in 4 weeks!! He's 47 lbs at 20 weeks!! Miley gained 7 lbs in the same 4 weeks and is 37 lbs. I wonder if her being spayed made her gain less? she's visibly smaller now and never use to be.
He is a big boy!
I put Charlie in her crate for about 30 min after she eats. This way, she won't be bouncing around right after the meal!!! I also hand feed her whenever I could, so she won't be eating too fast.
