Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

Does anyone have a black doodle that is pure black and has not faded? I know that poodle breeders can usually tell if the puppy will fade to silver, turn blue, or stay a rich black color. Is this possible to do with doodles? Do breeders normally breed for black doodles? It seems like they breed for chocolates and get the occasional blacks instead. I think black doodles are gorgeous but I've never seen one that has not faded. I would love to see a black doodle with a gorgeous flowing fleece coat. It seems like on breeder websites that black puppies tend to have curly coats. If anyone has a black doodle with a fleece coat I would love to see a picture.

From what I've read breeders definitely breed for specific colors at times.
Yup. I think what I read on a forum is that it's hard to get those blacks consistent because then you need to either get really lucky with breeding stock or place color above health/temperament which is not a good option. Plus because liver pigment dogs are so popular now it's harder to find good blacks.
The "blue's" are the ones that do not fade. We had a blue Stand Poodle she was 12 yo not a speck on gray on her. I have a picture of her in my photos. In that pic she was 11 ( I was 14) :)
I have had three black poodles, all from show lines, and none of them faded. My last girl was still inky black up to her death at 16. In conformation, color is a big deal, and black has to be black. The blues are actually dilute blacks; I know there is a dilute gene, but I don't know much about it. I do know they are breeding blues from silver lines now, too.
I think the fading in the black doodles may be due to the fact that I see very few black retrievers used in breeding doodles. To get a good deep black that doesn't fade, as Adina said, you have to have strong black lines on both sides.
Here's an article on poodle color genetics that is easier to read than some others I've seen. Of course, when you throw a retriever into the mix, much of this may not apply.

From what I read on another forum, to have blacks that stay true there has to be strong black lines behind them without (or at least only very few dilute colors which I believe include reds and apricots and dogs with rose/liver pigment). I think not seeing fleece coats is just coincidence...I don't think they are connected, though Tuscan Ridge Labradoodles has had some dark blacks that were fleece...I THINK.
I have a black one. He's more scruffy than anything else...here's the most recent pic I have of him taken after a bath.

He's pure black with a touch of red on his beard and a few white hairs here and there.
