Kennel Cough

Ellie has had kennel cough for a little over 4 weeks now. She's been eating and full of energy for the past 3.5 weeks. The vet has put her on 1 cough suppressant and 2 different kinds of antibiotics.

She really only coughs when she's pully extremely hard on her leash or first in the morning when her throat is dry. That's about it...

Does anyone know how long it is suppose to last? I've heard it's typically 3 weeks??

I heard they usually do better after the first week, but if it continues and does not seem to be getting better or is getting worse, I would contact my Vet and see if Ellie needs a med change.

one of my dogs had kennel cough, and the cough lasted for about 5 days after she started on the meds.

She probably needs a second round of antibiotics. Call the vet

Mickey (our foster) had a horrendous case of KC. It took weeks for him to stop coughing. BUT he came from a shelter where he lived for 4 weeks. How long he had it we will never know. When we picked him up they gave us the meds they were supposedly giving him (of course, it was the wrong antibiotic). Once he was on the correct antibiotic and cough meds, he got better - slowly everyday. I got for him an organic herbal drops that seemed to help the cough.
The company is called 'Earth Animal - Cough & Wheeze'. It seemed to help soothe his cough.

As long as you the cough getting better I would give it a few more days. If by Friday she is still coughing, I would get her back to the vet.

I would go ahead and get some more medication if your vet thinks that is a good idea. I know they want her cleared up before she gets spayed. Peri says "get well soon" to sister Ellie :)

Aww, thanks everyone! Ellie's back on another antibiotic (went to the vet yesterday). Hopefully this cough goes away soon. Good thing is that she has energy (sometimes way too much) and eats like a mad dog :)

yes, what is up with the increased appetite? I was about to start a discussion in Puppy Madness on this. Peri is pushing Tacky out of the way to eat. She has already had 1 cup today. Yikes.
