Hi! I was wondering if anyone ever had issues with dry dog food. Ever since our aussie doodle had pancreatitis, we had her on canned food. We tried Nutro for sensitive stomachs, but then she got sick as we added the dry back into her diet. The vet said perhaps she could be sensitive to the preservatives in the dry food. We then switched her to Nature's Recipe, canned chicken for sensitive stomachs (no corn or wheat). She was doing great, but "people" said I should try and switch her over to the same brand/type but in dry. Trying the switch now, but nervous. So far I have only added about 2/3 cup per day mixed in with the canned. It's been about 3 days now. Yes, I guess it's more cost efficient and better for her teeth (she does gnaw on nyla bones), but... Any thoughts on the subject??? THANKS!!!

Shelly, please join us in The Food Group. We have extensive info and discussions there about this and every other topic concerning dog food and feeding.
The short answer to your question is that neither of the brands you mentioned are very good foods. Nutro has been subject to numerous recalls, the mosrt recent being just a week or so ago, and Nature's Recipe is no better.

OH NO! I thought the Nature's Recipe was good! It looked so much better than the others. I could actually make out the potato and carrots in it. I will definitely read more on the food group. My concern was whether to bother switching her to dry, and now I have to worry about switching her food. I actually chose this too because of the low fat content. I was concerned being that she had that one episode of pancreatitis due to getting into the garbage and eating the fat from boneless pork ribs...What ever happened to the days when dogs could eat anything and everything and still be 'healthy'???? Thanks so much!
What happened to those days was the Free Trade Agreement, lol!
LOL!!!
Hey Shelly,
Seeing our dogs are so very similar, I have Krimmi on Candiae (All Life Stages) I switched him over to that as soon as we got him at 9 weeks and he's been on that ever since. He has done really well on that. 1 cup in the morning and 1 cup at night. There are so many brands of food out there it's hard to figure out which one is actually any good. He has thrown up the odd time but I think that is just because the bugger eats everything he can get his mouth on on our walks, be it gum or whatever. I am always trying to scan ahead of him and most of our walks consist of me saying "leave it" over and over lol
Anyways hopefully you will be able to figure it out. I couldn't even imagine feeding canned food all the time.
Thanks Corinna, and Everyone! I'll have to do my research. Really, the only reason I was switching originally was that "other" people (especially my hubby) said I 'should' put her back on dry. The canned doesn't really bother me at all, and she seems to like it and has done well on it, but now, after reading through everyone's great postings, perhaps I really am doing a disservice to her. Ugh! Who knows what's right?? I will definitely have to research this one! I'd call my vet (again), but I'm sure he already thinks I'm a lunatic LOL
Thanks so much for ALL of your help! I truly appreciate it! ~ Shelly
shelly, I also use Canidae all stages. When we got Ollie, he was on some sort of Purina dry puppy food, and I gradually switched him over to the Canidae...My other dog has been on Canidae for the past 12 yrs, and I have had no problem with the food. During the terrible recall of pet food, Canidae was one of the few that does not get its ingrediants from China...I love how it works for their coats, the have a wonderful shine and feel to them...You can go online and see where you can purchase this food near you.Just go to Canidae.com. Now Oliver is 6 mos old, and he weighs 55 lbs. He is not fat in the least, and we feed him 2 cups in the am, and 2 cups for dinner....He is going to be a big boy, lol, but he loves the food and bowel movements are fine too...I do not like wet dog food, many years ago I opened a can of it, and for some reason it just turned my stomach, and I just never used it...I also like to give them a scrambled egg, or cheese maybe once a week in their food for a treat....
California Naturals also has a good formula for sensitive stomachs, and is a very high-quality premium food from the same company as Innova/EVO.
The absolute best canned food for dogs with sensitive stomachs is Evanger's Classic Chicken & Rice, and it is also very well priced.
Hondo has had liver failure twice and the vet has just decided to call it jaundice of an unspecified origin. He had to start back eating with cooked meat products, and then a cooked food called Happy Dog (comes dry and you prepare it). He has worked back up to 1/3 dry food (Solid Gold), 1/3 meat (human quality) and 1/3 Happy Dog. It is strange cooking for your dog, but well worth it for this guy. Whenever he is sick, the first thing he will eat is routisserie chicken - that is something he just cannot resist.
