It has been about a week since we had Oliver fixed, he is six months old now, and he had no ill effects from the surgery...The only thing I have noticed is that he is humping my other dog, a male 12 yr old Aussie that he is buddies with...He did not do this before the surgery, why now???,,,I find I am constantly yelling no at him more and more because of this this week...I thought that since he didn't do this before, he wouldn't do this after he was fixed...Any suggestions how to stop this??? Or advice....Thanks, Cheryl
1) It takes a while for the hormones to wear off.
2) It may have NOTHING to do with hormones and merely play, excitement or trying to climb in the ranks.
3) He might be 'itchy' there and has found it helpful.
I don't allow humping INDOORS...because sometimes they play alone out in the yard and I can't stop it then. Keep working on obedience and then it doesn't matter WHAT Oliver does you'll always be able to call him off of it. In the meantime, keep a leash on him around the house when you're supervising him so you can pull him off without yelling.
thank you, I was really getting upset...I don't like yelling at either of them, lol, but when I do they do react and stop what they are doing...I am hoping that it is just hormones wearing off, and not your number 2 reply....They get along so well, they play and share so well, and Renny has showed Ollie that he is the alpha, and Ollie respects that...Thats why I was not happy that he was letting Ollie do this...But then again he lets him get away with a lot of things, until he thinks enough is enough, then he puts him in his place....Ollie is now taller then Renny and weighs about the same. thanks for the reply, I appreciate it...
Humping behavior sometimes is just a dominance thing when playing. My female sometimes does this to my male. They have been spayed and neutered for a long time.
We have an eight month old female and a six month old male. We had them both fixed last week. The male puppy has never done this. The female does this to the male frequently. I also think it is a show of dominance. Our female is the alpha dog of the house. I have to pull her off him many times every day. I have not been successful in getting her to stop and I tell her no constantly. She does it every time they start playing and wrestling. It is a little embarrassing when we have people at the house.
Cheryl, our dog Penny has never been around male dogs and yet she tries to hump my leg sometimes! It happens she she gets really revved up and wants to "dominate." Adina has some great advice there - and don't worry, Oliver is plenty normal! :-)
thanks Michele, I am glad that I am not nuts, lol....And yes sometimes he does try to dominate my other dog, I just wish my other one wasn't such a wuss with Ollie...It takes him a long time and a lot of messing around before he puts him in his place, lol...Thanks for the reply
He has stopped attempting to mount us at home (thankfully he is a mini LOL) but, he still does it to other dogs. Mainly when he is very excited or dominance/ranking. Since, he is only 10 months old he seems to pick on very small dogs or older dogs. He is too submissive to attempt an alpha or a beta.
I now work at doggie daycare and I can tell you - it's VERY common with a group of dogs. Max isn't the only one and shockingly (for me) not the worst offender. I never realized how common it was because my past dogs were indoor dogs minus socialization. When it occurs we discourage it and say "bad play." Honestly, it doesn't always help but, it's our job to stop it so, we do. :)
