Blake will not leave the house for a walk without grabbing his beloved stuffed Alligator...He takes it eveywhere we go and will carry it for the entire walk, putting it down briefly to sniff for awhile but always remembers exactly where he left it and won't continue on without it...If I pick it up and hide it in my fanny pack, he knows it immediately and won't budge til I take it out and give it back to him....At night he sleeps on the end of my bed with it .....resting his chin on it like a pillow....That is...when he isn't sleeping on his back with all four paws up in the air snoring in my ear......
He also collects things he finds outside around the house...Acorns, pinecones and rocks..He's very particular about the kinds of rocks he prefers...they must be smooth and round...He doesn't eat them...He just seems to like the sound that they make on my wooden floor as he bats them around.....He will actually bring them inside, pull up my rug exposing the wood floor, lie down and bat the item back and forth in his paws making as much noise as he can....I have an entire collection of his treasures in my kitchen....I'll have to take a picture of Blakes's collection and post it......
Ok this will be fun....:)
Jordan will not go potty for anyone if I am around. She will go out side and sit at the door looking at me. I will end up going to another room so she cant see me.
She also will drag Payton by his collar and make him go where she wants him too. Brian and Payton, hates that she does this. I love it because sometimes she helps me and it is funny to watch. She will get Payton from the car and take him to the front door. Payton would much rather mark on every bush and make him way to the slowly to the door. Payton grumbles the whole time. It is great.
Jordan also cleans all the animals ears, she will pin down that cats (we have 3)like a mother and clean the ears, just the ears nothing else. Payton loves that she does it he will go up to her and shake his head and kind of tilts his head so she can clean them. It is cute, she has great mother instincts.
That's great!...I'm picturing the whole scenario and I'm laughing.....I'm imagining Payton's grumbles while being dragged by his collar....The ear cleaning scene is a killer...
I need to video it, it is so funny, Payton just looks humiliated. If you say "Jordan drop" she lets go of his collar.
Brian gets so upset. He will say "Why do you let her do that?" He tries to get to stop, he says "Jordan let go,let go!" She wont do it.I say "drop" she does.
It's the little power trips that makes me happy ;)
It's the cutest thing....I think it's a great example of doodles emotional capacity, intelligence and trust as any dog must feel completely safe and secure to lie on it's back and it demonstrates how much they trust you completely.
Halas also likes to sleep flat on his back. His front feet will kind of stick up, but he just lets his back legs spread apart so the whole world can see his privates. He sleeps this way at night, in the bed, but not in his kennel or on the floor.
He doesn't have a thing for rocks, like Blake does, but he does bat some of his toys around like Blake does with the rocks. Halas does it with a tennis ball, and with a round squishy nose that he pulled off of a giant stuffed moose. He likes to bat those things to me, or toss them around with his mouth, and then have me throw them back. It's like we're playing catch.
He does one other really amusing thing with his ball or ball-shaped toys. I have a coffee table with a shelf below it. The shelf is only about 3 inches from the floor. Halas loves to stick the tennis ball or moose nose right by the table and then push at it with his paws or his nose until it goes under the table. He likes to see how far he can push it under and still reach it. He'll try to squeeze his head and legs under the table just to push it a little further. This is an interactive game, since I end up having to play with him to get the ball when he can't reach it. He'll do this until I finally stop getting the ball for him. My friend has a golden retriever who also used to do this with some of his toys, so I'm wondering if it's the golden retriever side showing.
When Halas was very young, and I'd say that I had to leave and he'd have to go to his kennel, he'd roll over onto his back in a completely submissive position. I'd go to pick him up, and he'd just go completely floppy. I'd have to support his head, and he'd just let the rest of himself go limp. It was like passive resistance. Now he's quite a bit bigger, so it's a little more difficult for me to do this. But, still, when he can tell I'm getting ready to go somewhere, he just lays down and rolls onto his back. I can't resist his cuteness, so I go pick him up to cuddle for a minute. He's too heavy for me to carry him like floppy puppy any more, but he still goes limp and is generally unhelpful when I go to lift him.
Leslie I know exactly what you're talking about with the back legs laying flat and the privates exposed!...lol....How undignified!....and the ball under the table routine too......Blake does the same thing shoving his ball under my couch til he can't reach it and then he'll come over by me and stare at me until I get up and retrieve it for him...
Blake has an interesting habit when he suspects that I will be leaving.....He grabs my wrist gently and pulls me to the couch where I sit down, then he immediately jumps up and throws his entire body on mine wrapping his paws around my neck and resting his head on my shoulder like a baby......it's like he's saying "NO...I love you...please don't go".....It's a killer....He knows whenever my father visits that it means I will be leaving for a dinner date...So now everytime my Dad walks in the door, after greeting him Blake will do this "throw his body on mine" routine only instaed of resting his head on my shoulder he looks at my father with a sad face and grunts and whines at him as if saying "Please don't take her".......My father cracks up everytime......
Oh, that's a killer. Their cute little faces are just irresistible. That's the toughest thing about having a doodle. You have to develop a resistance to the cuteness, or you can't ever train them or discipline them. Or even leave the house. They always look at you with that face, as if they're saying, "What? Did I do something wrong? How could you possibly be mad at me? Look at my face. How could you not want to spend every waking minute with me?"
I totally agree.....and they are so damn smart!...I find that if I reprimand Blake with a stern tone of voice, he will actually turn his head away from me but eye me from the side...His expression is like "You better talk nicely to me or I won't listen..." Sometimes he actually turns his back to me!....he can be so stubborn and fresh!......Then I have to revert to the sweet encouraging voice and he comes right to me tail wagging furiously.....
I know!...I do!.....In fact for me, being single and in my forties, it's no longer a case of "Men are Dogs"...on the contrary...it's "Dogs are Men!"....lol
Leslie, we could have written your post. Boone (poodle mom, dad unknown) also likes to push his ball toys under the coffee table and under my chair. When he can't reach it and we try to help he has to be right there and also help- digging with his paws. At first we thought it was accidental but he does it on purpose. He plays with some of his toys like a cat, batting and tossing and chasing.
He also did the passive resistance thing - laying on his back and going completely limp until we started putting a treat in the crate. Now they both race into the crates like they had never had a treat before.
They both sometimes sleep on their backs, completely splayed out.
We have always had labs and they never did any of this. Must be a doodle thing.
