Can you have a non-shedder that doesn't matt? Peri does not shed and has not started matting yet (at almost 8 months old). She is a mini. I comb her at least every other day. I hear all about non-shedders matting and the need for rigorous grooming, but was wondering if that just applies to later generations and not f1s? Any ideas? I also know that their coat can start to change around this time....does the matting occur over night. I know there are a lot of questions in here.... Thanks in advance :)

Update at almost 9 months: Okay - she is starting to shed like a maniac!!!! Is this normal? Clumps everywhere. I am brushing her at least every other day, but am finding balls of it in corners in my house. She has never shed before!

Update at 1 year:  shedding MUCH less and matting only slightly - in the normal places, such as behind the ears, under the arms, etc...I can control it if I comb her 1x/week.  A few months ago it was every other day.  I think I am lucky with her coat.  Barely sheds (I mean, she is almost non-shedding) and barely matts.  I better knock on wood.

Halas is an F1, and his matting started at about 9 months old. And it did feel like it happened overnight. So I think you may be getting close to matting time.
Yes I think it's possible. Adrianne's Samantha doesn't shed (F1 LD) and she doesn't mat I believe.
I think if you get lucky with a loose, fleece coat that's uniform you may also miss out on matting...at least it would be very minimal the way a golden retriever might mat simply if not groomed AT ALL.
I guess we will just wait and see...I bet she will end up matting! I don't care either way, I actually got pretty lucky since she doesn't shed. I completely expected her to shed some.
My Gracie Doodle is an F1 Golden with a wavy coat. She only had about two bouts of matting and that was when I let her hair get longer than about 2 inches. The first time I got a little lax on the combing/brushing. I usually do her every few days. The second time was when she went to the Doggie Ranch for 7 days when we were out of town (2 yrs. old). They have a natural pool that the dogs love. Gracie spent all of her time in the pool and in the dirt and mud. When she is there she doesn't get brushed or groomed. I had to do a lot of cutting out mats. She looked like a moth went through her hair. I have learned that she does best when I clip her to 1/2" and let it grow no longer than 2 ". If she has to go to the ranch then I for sure clip her to 1/2". She is also always hot so she prefers the shorter hair. I really think the key to keeping them mat free is to brush/comb every other day. You also have to make sure you really get through the hair. I also have a dematting device that I use on her legs and paws. We really have not had any mats in over 6 months. The matting around the neck and under the ears is from their collar. The webbed ones really cause mats. Gracie has a leather collar and also a Guinness water collar for swimming, water play and visits to the ranch. All and all...we really do not have a mat issue at all and she is 2 1/2 years old.
Thanks for the input - I have started noticed some very slight matting near the ears, which may be the start of it. We are good about combing her out with a steel comb, but I ordered a Les Poochs brush in case the matting continues. THANKS!
I have an F1, F1b, and and F6 so be assured an F1 is the least work. The F1 does shed and matts but not like my F6. They are cute but brushing seems to be the best grooming approach. Good luck with your dood and happy holidays!

Allyson, it could be the dreaded coat change! Watch out for the matting! I'm hoping Sheba is just finishing up with this. She will be a year old soon and she is a F1. Sheba would shed a little but not much. Then we noticed more shedding and then the matting started. I spent several hours at a time over a week or two cutting out all her mats. She was very patient so it made it easy for me. I didn't have to get her shaved down thank goodness and she still looks great! I notice now the shedding is now slowing down! Duke is 9 months old now and he is a F1b....guess I better keep an eye on him too. He hasn't started his coat change yet! Good luck!
Oh thanks for the response. I am trying to be really good about the brushing. I did splurge on a Les Poochs brush, and must say they are pretty darn amazing! It is still not too bad shedding, but I am used to her not shedding at all!
I will be careful to watch for mats and hope for the best.
Sheba probably will always shed some. She really started shedding, then matting. After removing the matts her shedding has slowed down to where she was before she started shedding and matting. It will be interesting to see what happens next! Maybe that's what Peri will do.
I hope! Went home yesterday and brushed quite a few matts out. Thank goodness for my Les Poochs brush...works wonders.
Hi all! Okay - I have two questions.... what exactly is the differnece between F1, F1b,etc. What are the qualifications???? And two - Can someone tell me what a Les Pooch brush is??? I have actually looked for one, and can't seem to find one anywhere. With all of this snow and now rain.... Tori is mating pretty badly. I did spray her down with dematting spray before our big storm, because I knew there would be no keeping her in. Got most of the mats out and now they are coming back. I like to demat her as much as I can before going to the groomer so she won't have to be cut so much (I LOVE her hair long)... Kinda' like cleaning before the cleaning lady comes! LOL
Thanks so much!!! By the way - Tori's mom was an australian shepherd and her dad was a standard poodle...
