Hi! I am not part of the Southern California group so I am going to write my reply here:)
I use Nexguard (monthly oral) for Bella's flea and tick and have no problems. For heartworm, I currently use the Proheart injection(every six months), and have no problems. However, I prefer Sentinal Spectrum because it also prevents worms. She was on that when she was a puppy, but then when we moved, the vet didn't have it so we had to use this.
Collette, I agree with you about doodles having the best personalities! All three of mine are very different, but wonderful. Two of mine are rescues. We have only had Charlie (the parti colored boy) since June and he has a ways to go in the settling down department. None of mine would be considered standard because we were trying to downsize - thinking of our future and trying to lift them - but the standards have such a beautiful presence.
I am glad you changed your mind on the San Diego breeder. Their website did not indicate that they were reputable - maybe they are, but all I could find was that you could 'order' a puppy. They never showed their dogs - how many they had, whether they health tested, etc.
The breeder you are looking at now appears much more professional. They certainly have a lot of dogs though for someone who says they are a small, family breeder. Even if some of them are in guardian homes, that is a lot of dogs with a lot of puppies to socialize! I couldn't find what the health guarantee specifically required. What you don't want is one that requires you to return the dog.
Are you looking for a standard or a mini?
Choosing a family member for the next 12 -15 years is so exciting. I hope you will keep me updated on your process and can't wait to meet at a future romp.
F1's are adorable. A little less predictable in their coat, but there is something very cute and cartoonish about the first generation. Kona is a double doodle from an F2B medium Goldendoodle mom and a miniature multi-gen Australian Labradoodle. I went with the multi-gen because I'm allergic to most dogs and needed a more predictable coat that tends to shed less. Fortunately, it worked out for me and he doesn't shed at all.
Welcome! Doodlekisses is a great place to learn/share about doodles. There are many groups that you can join. I am so glad to see that you joined the So. Cal group. Our next romp is Sept 18th at Arbor Dog Park in Seal Beach. Even though you don't have your puppy yet, you could meet up with lots of doodles and their owners. It would give you a chance to see the variety in doodles. There are also groups for grooming, nutrition, health/medical, types of doodles, puppy groups etc. Enjoy!

I only use flea preventive = Comfortis for Hershey and Frontline plus for Sydnay. Here is some good information on heartworms.
P.S. The vet does the injection:)

I hope that sorta helps:)
