I had always heard breeders say that male dogs are more affectionate than females, but I had only ever had females, so I had nothing to compare them to. Now that I have Jack, I'm thinking the rumors are true. I know some of you have at least one of each, so tell us...who are the biggest "lovers"...the boys or the girls?

I hadn't heard this, but can vouch for the fact that while Snickers, our female, is affectionate--Dooley, our male is far MORE affectionate. Total snuggle bunny, loves to just lean into you, no matter whether you're standing, sitting, laying down--he just finds a way to have contact with you. He doesn't discriminate either, strangers, friends, whomever...he loves love.
Hi Valri and Tom! Yep, Dooley is a lover! Toby is the same - loves lovin'. When he leans into us like that we call it "lean love". I can't get enough of it!
I think sons are like this too. My son is the first by my side when I am sad:)
My boy is the sweetest dog I've ever had. He's so sensitive to my needs. He loves to snuggle & "spoon". When I'm sad or not feeling well, he will come to my side of the bed & just stand there. Then, he'll put his chin down on the bed & look up at me with those sad eyes. Then when I reach to pet him, he will lick my hand. He loves to hug & give kisses too. I'll say "Come here doodle" & put my arms around his neck & he actually walks in closer so that I can give him a big hug & I'll say "Aww, hugs, mommy loves you." On the way home after being groomed, I'll turn around & start talking to him (he sits in the backseat). I'll say "I missed you." "Give mommy kisses" & he always gives me a little puppy kisses on my cheek. Sometimes he does it without even asking. I think he must really miss me too. It's so sweet.
You know I had never given this much thought either but I have to agree with everyone else. My doodle is a female and very sweet, loving dog. But my two little boys, one is a terrier mix and the other a dachshund are over the top needy loving little guys, especially Bailey the mix. It is sweet how much they love you but sometimes it’s a little tiny weensy bit annoying when they constantly need to be touched.
Up until Calli, we'd only had male dogs (cockers for 10+ years, dalmatians before that). She's an ultimate sweetie but not a huge cuddler. She has more of a "what can you do for me" attitude!! Our most recent addition of Cooper has turned out to prove the theory that boys are more affectionate, at least in our case. He's very much a cuddler and allows even my 15-month-old grandson to wrap his little arms around him for a hug.
Our Boy took lot's of work, as he was a nipper when we first got him. But now he loves to hug, but not the biggest kisser. He looks like he understands everything you say, and is so endearing with those head tilts. He has become more cuddly due to getting Kona.

Kona our girl has been a kisser, licker and lover from the start! She likes to sit on the couch and curl up next to your legs. Wants to be the first one to kiss on us when we get home, but I think that's due to wanting to be ahead of Buddy LOL
And loves to play on the floor with you, especially with her daddy. So it is opposite at our house with boys and girls.
This is very interesting, Gina...I think there may be a "daddy's girl, momma's boy" factor going on with our dogs, similar to what you sometimes see with kids.
Thanks for sharing this.
Rosco is far more affectionate than our two girls.
OMG, I cannot even imagine having a male if they are more affectionate. We only have 2 females, but they are both so loving, they are constantly wanting to snuggle or sit with us or give kisses. Morgan will actually bark at me to come sit on the sofa so she can sit beside me, and Maddie will sit on the floor at my feet. If I stop scratching one and reach to hug the other, I get a paw on my leg as if to say, "hey, remember me???"
I agree with this. My girl is very-very affectionate. I'd like to say i wouldn't want a more affectionate dog. I'd never get anything done. I don't get much done now. I'm going to stick with girls.
Our male, Cole, is much more affectionate and cuddly than Molly, our female. They both are so wonderful and loving but Cole is definitely the lover of the two.
