Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

I was asked a question today, and I do not know the answer.I hope you all can help answer it.
Can Labradoodles be kept outside or do they have to be house dogs? I keep mine in the house. I live in Texas and it is to hot to keep any dog outside as for as I am concerned, besides they are part of the family and I would not put a family member out in the yard to live. My Labradoodles would be miserable away from us.

My opinion.....If you're going to get a dog and stick it in the back yard, save your money. Dogs belong inside with their human beings. If you don't want dog hair or slobber or wet pawprints on a rainy day in your house, buy a goldfish. Dogs and cats are furry blessings and should be treated as such. Okay, I'm getting down off my soap box now. Thank you.
Couldn't agree more! Thanks for your post.
I agree completely and could not have said it any better.
Thanks, Deborah!
I truly believe that Doodles were meant to be indoor dogs. Most have such strong bonds with their families (as I think we all know) and love to be around them all the time! Because of the doodle nature, I wouldn't think it would healthy mentally for them to be outside all the time. I think they need the stimulation of people.

When we rescued Ari, we was an outdoor doodle chained up to a tree with a chain around his neck. I think the previous owners thought he was going to be a guard dog. When we rescued him, he was so starved for attention and didn't really know how to respond to the affection and love we gave him. He would go wildly crazy and at times hurt us because he was so excited. We literally had bruises up and down our arms and legs!

Thankfully we were able to work with him and show him the proper response to affection and now he is absolutely wonderful and gentle! No more jumping up and being wild.

So I do believe that him being locked outside all the time contributed to that behavior. I think doodles were meant to be around the "hoomans". ;)
That is SOoo sad :( Bless you for saving him:)
I don't think any dog should be left outside. If you choose to have a dog that should come with allowing them in the house. If you don't want a dog in the house don't get one! I think it's horrible to leave your dog outside all day and night. I have a neighbor who does that it makes me so angry.
I have never had an 'outside' dog and could never understand why someone would even get a dog it they were just going to let it tied outside all the time. I feel so sorry for any dog kept that way. Regardless of the breed, I don't think any dog should be kept outside all the time.
Isn't the main point of having a dog the companionship, love and everything wonderful they add to our lives? Why would anyone want a dog to leave outside? Buy an alarm company if it's for protection. Dogs belong with us as part of a pack as part of a family. If the intention is to leave it outside, you don't get a dog.
I agree with LynnNJ. Holly is our friend and our companion. We enjoy her right with us. I cannot understand having a dog only to keep it as a yard ornament.

Holly spends a lot of time outdoors (and so do we) when the weather is nice but, we never leave her outdoors when we are not home nor is she ever outside at night except to go potty. It never gets too cold for any dog during the day in Southern California (most days from October through June are probably in the 50-70 degree range). However, since we are inland from the ocean, it can get pretty hot from July through September. We make sure that Holly is indoors whenever it is hot.

We have a super yard for Holly to run and play in and she really enjoys it. Her Maltese friends share the yard with her but, only when they are dirctly supervised. Holly no longer eats everything in sight so we can trust her out in our yard for short periods without direct supervision. Even so, she usually comes in for her afternoon nap between about 11am and 2pm. All of our dogs flake out at those times.

It is wonderful to have a dog like Holly who has no doggie odor and does minimal shedding. We doggie sat out friend's massive Labrador and he shed terribly and also had a doggie odor about him even though he was clean. Although he spent nights indoors with us, he was outside the majority of the day.
Our dogs have an outdoor option and sometimes they just want to play or lie on their outdoor beds. When they have a treat, they also head to the outdoor beds to enjoy their treat. But most of the time they are indoors with us. It's one of the advantages to have a hypoallergenic, non-shedding dog for in the home; however, if you look at the slide show this week, you can see that they still get plenty dirty on their outside adventures. So, (as all doodle owners know) you just need to build your life around your dogs. They love to get wet and dirty, and you want to have clean, dry dogs in your home. You decided to share your life with these dogs, so make the necessary adjustments. No dog deserves to be left outside.
" No dog deserves to be left outside." I love that comment.

Leaving a doodle outside in Louisiana is not an option for most of the year. For our family, it is not an option at all.
We keep our doodle inside because she wants to be where we are. Our friends have her brother and they keep him outside and his personality is nothing like ours. They need companionship all the time!!!!
