Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

There is LOTS of discussions on leting us know when our doods want to go out, but what about coming in???

Giada will not bark to come in. She just waits by the door. This was fine this summer, but now that it's cold out and I forget she's out there, I feel bad. Last night she was out for about an hour, when I realized I hadn't let her back in I went to the back door and she was huddled in a ball against the door, and ran in to curl up on the couch/blanket as fast as she could. She stayed there in a small ball until I went to bed, then was hesitant about going out again. She must have been freezing!!!

I thought she would learn this from my older dog..........but no! I never taught Summer, she just did it. So, how did your dogs learn?

Yes, the receiver is inside your house. Its like a small box with a speaker. You can either set it to "ding-dong" or make a barking sound. Trevor keeps pressing the button until I come open the door so I have it on "ding-dong".
The barking sound would drive me nuts! I have the box near the front door, that way he can hear the "ding-dong" too, just in case he doesn't hit pad hard enough.
Review and video are uploaded.
I've never had a dog not let out some sort of bark to come in or go out. Our silly doodle was a first -he would jump way up at the door which resulted in scratches on the glass. So we went on a training campaign to NOT respond to that jumping but wait till he let out some sort of bark. It finally worked. No more jumping and he lets out a little bark to come in.
Now Giada must just be a super patient sort of dog - not sure how to advise since she'll just curl up and wait. She is certainly a sweetie girl! Maybe you can go out and before you open the door get her very excited to come in and if/when she barks quickly open the door. She'll catch on after doing this for awhile.
Thanks, she is a sweetie pie. That is one thing I like about her that she is so quiet, so I think I'll just wait and see with maturity if she'll learn it from Summer some day :)
Tamara-would installing a "doggy door" be a possibility for you? I know there are several people here who use them successfully.
I had thought about that at one time, but our back yard is too muddy for that.....I like to wipe her feet when she comes in. Thanks for the thought:)
Boomer and Mariner bark to come in. Shayna usually comes to the back slider and just sits there. Sometimes if she is waiting to come in Mariner we let us know Shayna is there.
That is so cute!!
My older lady Labradoodles go out, potty and return to the door barking to come in. We have a large fenced in area so our lovers-of-the-great-outdoors Labradoodles want to play and romp outside with each other as long as possible. They do not bark to come in because they want to stay out! Mixed bag I guess.
