What long lasting chew toys/bones does everyone use and like. My dogs love rawhide bones, but they get so yucky--I would love to find an alternative we can use daily and keep rawhides for special times when we NEED to keep them busy.

Thanks!

Our dogs LOOOOVE sterilized real bones. I have one that I bought hollow...and MANY that we bought stuffed with doggy junk food marrow =) They are available online and at most pet stores. I've never gotten the smoked...worried that they'd splinter more easily, but I have no idea if they do.

We have probably a dozen lying in various places of the house. The one Rosco always wants is the one Thule has, or the one that is stuck under the couch--the difficult one to get. They gnaw on these bones frequently throughout the day. You do have to watch them a bit because if they are strong chewers they can take off a chip here and there, but if they don't swallow stuff they break off they should be fine.

Clark tends to think that if we give our dogs rawhide and other high value treats then they won't ever "settle" for simple chew toys. Not sure if it's true, but it sure saves money from having to replace rawhide. PLUS ALL our dogs get the farts from rawhide!
So, they are not messy? The thing I hate about the raw hide is they are so sticky--it makes their paws all junky and I hate for them to take them on the carpet.

My dogs have the farts too--never linked it to the rawhide(???). I think I agree with clark about the high value chews.
NOT messy at all. Just dry bones. Slobbery until their slobber dries but it doesn't make that slime at all. I dunno why the pic didn't show up...hmmm..
HERE is the pic!

I think today I'm going to buy Ari a sterilized bone as opposed to a raw hide. I have to agree - I hate that the raw-hides get sticky and I hate to have them on my carpet as well. Today is Ari's birthday - so it might make a good gift for my boy. :)
I'm glad others think this too--my kids tell me I'm a neat freak!
We have the Teaser Jolly ball, they have played with one of them for a couple of years now. It lasts and my Kozzie girl plays soccer with it. She will push it all around the yard. Best toy ever!

I use these rolled up Pork Skin chews, also cow hooves and the Kong.
I just buy in bulk and we have 2 dog toy baskets so the pups help them selves when they want. I save the Kongs for special occasions. Of course I have chews all over my house because they do not seem to put them away when they are done.
Payton gets "crazy" with real bones, so they do not get them.
I heard raw hide is bad for dogs because they cant digest it. Has anyone else heard that?
My dog trainer and breeder both said never to give Toby rawhide. It can cause intestinal blockage if they swallow a piece of it.
We were told by our breeder to never allow rawhide. Her reasons were the potential for choking on a large piece that breaks off and, if such a piece is swallowed, it could potentilly obstruct in the small intestine or gastric outlet (where the stomach empties into the small bowel). We occasionally give Ollie the largest of the Nylabones, and another option, that he loves ,is putting some peanut butter into a kong toy of some type and putting it in the freezer over night. He then spends a fair amount of time working on getting the peanut butter out.
Jon - We were told just about the same things about rawhide from our vet - he also has been a practicing emergency vet for about 20 years so he has seen his share of problems from rawhide.
Ya know I also have read bad things about bones too, so ya just need to watch them. You can't keep everything away out of fear. My older dog has had rawhide for 6 years and NEVER had one problem.
