I picked up a 12 week old puppy nov 1, 2013.  Ever since we got her she has had diarrhea.  Has had normal fecal, then positive test for Giardia.  Was given profolatci treatment of flaygl, then  full dose.  Breeder took back and had her vet treat the dog with baytril.  dog comes home, fine for a handful of days and then back with diarrhea with bright red blood.  I have spent a ton of money on multiple vet bills, rx food, etc....  I am at my wits end.  She is now back at the breeders vet being treated with a sulfa drug.  Still no answers.  I am picking her up from the vet one hour away and do not know what to do.  I only found this site after doing much research and found a person who I believe had the same experience with the same breeder.  I unfortunately had already given the dog to the breeder to hopefully help me.  I have no idea what kind of bill I am going to face tomorrow after the dog being at the vet for one week.  Still have no answers as to why the dog is having bloody diarrhea.

The dog is gaining weight, eating and drinking normal no vomiting.  Can anyone please who has had this experience please help me.

Thank you,

Rebecc

The Rx food is garbage, the sawdust (aka cellulose) in it probably does 'firm' up a stool alright. The thing is you need your puppy healthy.  There is no way on earth I would feed that to any dog no matter what.

You have gotten great advice--I recommend you follow it and also want to tell you that we are not allowed to make comments about any breeder on the forum. People who are your "friends" on the site can send you private messages on your page. Sounds to me like working with the breeder is not a good option--if you are committed to keeping this pup (and I hope you are) then go to a new vet and do what you need to do for the puppy right away.

I also agree with what others have said.  Insist on Panacur, and I would make sure to also give a probiotic, (at least two hours apart from panacur).  Also, def stay away from RX foods…home cooking boiled chicken breast and sweet potatoes is a much better option for a "bland diet"  What food are you currently feeding? Do not switch foods, or give any treats until things are cleared up.  You really want to make sure you puppy does not get dehydrated from having diarrhea for so long.

When I first got my Oliver he had the poops a lot.  He tested negative for everything so I switched to grain free food, I was VERY careful on the treats I gave him and put him on a grain free, limited ingredient food and his poops firmed up.  He is 3 1/2 now and I slowly switched him to regular food and it seems like he does not need grain free, I guess he out-grew this issue.   I wish you luck !!!

Nothing I can add that hasn't already been said. Wash your hands of the Breeder and use a Vet you know and trust. Wishing your pup a speedy recovery.

Thank you to everyone.  We have arrived home safe and sound.  Other then smelling like a garbage can, we are all so happy to have her home.  A full fecal panel will be complete in a week.  She was sent home on Pirmor and Endurosyn.  I am waiting to get the test results and observe how her poop is before I take her to "my vet"

I hope and pray that maybe she is "cured"  One good sign is that two hours in a car she did not barf!!!  That is huge.

Thanks again I truly appreciate the support.  I wish I would have found this site back in november.

Thanks again,

rebecca

Glad to hear you've got your baby home. Rather than going back to whatever food you'd been feeding (RX junk or other kibble), a better option would be to start feeding her plain boiled chicken breast, white rice and mashed sweet potato (several meals a day) until her poops firm up and appear normal. You can add low-sodium chicken broth to the meals for added liquids, which I'm sure she needs. Also a couple tablespoons of non fat, plain (unflavored) yogurt can never hurt. Once her poops are normal then you can very slowly transition back to her regular food (over a period of 5 or more days).

When or if you decide to take your pup to your own vet you can have the breeder's vet electronically send her complete file over to them. That way they'll be up-to-date on all the tests that were already performed. You shouldn't have to worry about the continuity of care and feel stuck with the breeder's vet just because they've done all the tests so far. Since the breeder works for the vet in question, it wouldn't surprise me if the vet simply won't give a diagnosis because he/she is friends with the breeder and knows it wouldn't benefit the breeder. How convenient for her! 'Send your puppy to my vet...' Sounds a little too fishy to me!

Wishing you and your puppy the best.

Debb, that sounds like good advice. This puppy has had so many meds at this stage....a bland homemade diet would be the best option for now and absolutely no treats.  I am in the middle of an issue with one of my breeders right now and there is no way in the world I would go to her breeder.

The whole thing has been beyond fishy.  Instead of them faxing a copy of my records to "my" local vet, they wrote a letter.  I insisted that before I pay the bill I want the copies of the chart.  Upon returning home and reviewing the chart.  There is no documentation and the conversation that I had with the vet are different.  The vet said that she was having 4-5 bowel movements some firm some not.  which she said was not normal for a 5 month old puppy.  She also verbally said that the dog was having accidents in her kennel.  When I asked to get her there she sat in a cement walled kennel with a pile of poop laying next to her.  The chart says 2-3 normal poops per day.  So at this point I have zero confidence that anything that has or happened within the last week is true or false.  She has had one normal poop since arriving at home.  I have boiled chicken which i just fed to her.  I will add sweet potato tomorrow.  Now the next thing is the breeder had her on purina pro puppy chicken.

I cringed when I picked her up to find that is what she was being fed.  Her is the kicker my current vet had me get that rx junk and supported the purina pro.

Worst case senario her fecal comes back positive and then we will treat it.  If it comes back negative I am going to treat her as if she has IBS go grain free with low fat content.

what an incredible "shitty" journey I have been on.

Thanks again to everyone,

rebecca
