My doods went to the groomers today for a big clip.  They have been there a few times. While there the groomer does everything, clip, ears and cuts their nails.

After being home for about 10 mins we noticed that Murphy was bleeding - the nail had been cut too short on his front left foot and it was bleeding a lot.  I sat with him holding a paper towel to it and it eventually stopped (after about 5 mins).  We then took him inside and sat with him on his bean bag (I didn't want him to walk and knock it again straight away).  Anyway he has not got up from his beanbag for about 2 hours now - even if someone comes to the door he just sits there.  He doesn't appear to be in any pain though.

Does this sound normal? Would he be in pain?  We googled what to do when it first happened, which we did but it then said to take them to the vet (which we didn't do as it stopped bleeding)

Any words of advice would be appreciated :-)

Thanks

This is one of the hazards of clipping nails and is quite common.  Qualified groomers should know better than to let this happen and certainly should have stopped the bleed and told you about it.  You can but styptic powder which you dip the toenail in and it stems the bleeding.  It should be available at your local pet store and is worth having in for future problems.

I would take a look at it in a while just to check that it was simply a nail cut too short and not worse. If it is simply that then he should be fine in a short while.  In black nails it can be very difficult to see where the veins end.

Sorry this happened - ouch!  I trust the groomer that we have, I'm too afraid to try cutting their nails for this very reason.  It is common and he should be fine but I'd certainly let the groomer know.
Ooch....that is soooooooop painful for the dog when they cut the nails so short as it actually gets the nerve. Poor pup. My groomer does NOT use clippers on my dog's nails. She uses a dremel, which is like a doggie nail file. The others are correct. You should let your groomer know what happened and also, tell them NOT to cut anymore but use the dremel. It takes a little longer but is so worth it. Also, the nails are nice and smooth. Hope it heals soon...poor baby :(
Poor Murhphy!  It probably does hurt.  My vet said the pain would be like me tearing a nail and it bleeding.
I accidently quicked Gavin once.  The bleeding made it look scary, but he did not even seem to notice, so I think it literally hurt me more than it hurt him.  Or as my dad would say "it's a long way from his heart."  Gavin sacks out for hours after being at the groomer.  All that standing still, washing and clipping seems to really tire them out.  Don't worry.
Our vet cuts their nails-Chloe has one that bleeds everytime, so we forgot and got blood in the truckon the way home and she tried licking it. It's weird, like this toenail is hollow or something? She may feel a little pain because she keeps licking it. We try to remember to remind him everytime. If it's really bad maybe it has to have a cream or bandage out on so no infection??? Not sure.
Thanks everyone - Murphy has woken up back to his normal self - maybe he just wasn't happy with his new 'look'!!!!  I will certainly be talking to the groomer about it...
