Added another doodle...help!

Lizzy Lu is our 3 year old black Goldendoodle. We picked up the new puppy 4 days ago. Maggie Mae is right at 8 weeks old. The first three days were so sweet. They played non stop and it looked like a good fit. Today everything changed! Lizzy got very moody and would not come in out of the yard. She almost seemed depressed. My husband and I began to evaluate the situation and decided that Lizzy felt like she was no longer top dog. She has gotten rather agressive with the puppy today and and our concern is that she will go too far before we can stop her. How can we help her adjust?

Welcome to the world of two dogs!! Two females can sometimes be difficult but  it should all settle down in a few months, but here are a few tips:  NEVER leave the two dogs together without close supervision until the puppy is grown up.  Always put Lizzy Lu in first place, she gets her dish of food put down first, she gets your welcome first, etc.  Lizzy will be top dog for a long time because she is older.  Usually if you want to move both dogs for some reason, like in from the yard, call Lizzy Lu first and walk beside her and let the puppy follow.  Keep your obvious attention on Lizzy, pat her head, baby talk her or whatever and keep the puppy within sight.  Keep puppy on long leash if she falls to follow Lizzy.

Don't acknowledge or worry about how Lizzy feels, she is top dog right now, so treat her like one, but do not reinforce unwanted behavior i.e. sulking, aggression. Let her 'sulk', maybe she just needs some time to herself.  Stop aggression immediately or preferably before it starts with a sharp loud word, like the bark the real momma dog would use.

Put this post in the puppy group and two dog group to get more responses.

That is great advice from Maryann. We have 2 and we did all those things as well as making sure each dog had some alone time with us. 

We found our older dog also needed some down time and what seemed like "sulking" was more just taking a break from the puppy and all that energy.

Our older dog led the way in training and quickly and efficiently showed the puppy what was acceptable and what was not!

The fact that an adult dog can play with an 8 week old pup and no one gets hurt is a bit of a miracle in itself. Usually, a big dog is too rough with a tiny pup and they joints and muscles of a baby can not take the punishment--so Lizzy might be particularly gentle--but also Lizzy might be exhausted! But I really agree with the advice you have gotten already and I say "ditto"!

The advice you have gotten is excellent.  Another possible suggestion is to purchase an ex-pen or two and connect the ends to make a 'cage' for the puppy so that she can be around all of you but separated from Lizzy Lu. Some people have put some linoleum under the cage area to catch accidents if your flooring is not puppy proof.
