Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum
Without going into personal issues, I decided to STRETCH out Ginger's food a bit.
She eats Blue...and I thought if I added a small bag of .....sit down....take a deep breath.....Purina One.... okay, I said it....that it might make the doodle dollars last long. Now Ginger won't eat the Blue!!! She managed to pick through the bowl and leave the Blue, in the bowl and on the floor.
So now I bought a new flavor of Blue and NO GO...INow I am in a pickle!! She is eating Blue, fish and sweet potato...sorta...
I guess my question is, what do people with any food that their dogs will not eat? Can you donate it to the local SPCA? Even if the bag is opened?
Thanks

We usually use Natural Balance but I thought an alternate brand might be good in case of recall so we purchased a bag of Wellness. My dogs love it! I am going to try a couple of the other more highly recommended brands now that
a new store opened up that carries them, but it will be a slow transition. Maybe adding something like parmesan cheese or yogurt to the Blue might help Ginger get back to enjoying it.
She likes the Purina One because it's like the Burger King, well probably even worse than that, of foods! I remember Tacky once stole some food when we were visiting DH in law school - his roommate's dog at Alpo and Tacky acted like it was crack and he was addicted.
I would try to donate the Purina One to the shelter and do what you can to feed Blue if at all possible. You could add canned green beans (rinse first) to stretch it out a little too....for those months you need to.
OH BTW my dogs have not liked Blue....not sure why.
lol..you arr right...she seems like she is looking for a "fix"
My sister's doodles don't like Blue either.
Our humane society takes food - but then they dump it in a local park! you could freeze it, then try to get Ginger to eat it again at a later date.
personally, Id just give her the BLUE, with no Purina or anything else. She will eat it when shes hungry
Just because a bag of food is cheaper, it doesnt mean it is cheaper to feed a dog. I just went through this with my inlaws who just adopted a dog from the humane society. Their previous dogs ate poor quality foods. So we looked at prices of lots of different bags of food, from poor quality to high quality and worked out how much it would cost to feed their dog, based on the amount they would need to eat. The high protein grain free foods actually turned out cheaper that the low quality, low protein, grain foods (they eat less of it). We worked out it would cost around $1 a day (60lb dog) for most high quality brands (Orijen, Acana, Canidae, Performatrin etc - all the grain free ones). Plus you save on vet bills when feeding high quality food.
And really, a dollar or so a day is not alot of money. $30 a month - its easy to cut a few little things out of our lives to be able to save that amount of money for our baby to eat the best food. Such as take out coffee a few times a week, 2 bottles of wine, 1 dinner out, buying breakfast/lunch a once or twice a week, a few snacks during the month. Cut out meat once a week and have a vegetarian meal and that will pay for the dog food. And this is for a 60lb dog - if you have a mini, then its even less of a sacrifice!
