BoBou is getting some of his manly parts removed tomorrow (neutered), and we are still on the fence about getting him Microchipped at the same time. We know we want to, but I was really hoping for AVID which our vet doesn't do (haven't asked why). We're moving in a week, and will be getting a new vet shortly after we move, at that point we could get microchipped, potentially with AVID. However, since we are moving, we are extra worried about the need for a microchip NOW.

I've searched, and not seen much about the AKC branded microchip here on DK. Anyone have any gut reactions for or against this? I'm also worried about it migrating, since BB is still pretty young 5.5 months, and was hoping to do it initially around 1 year.

Random, but our vet is charging $55 with the registration included, that sound about typical?

I was at a shelter dog walk a few weeks ago and Home Again was there which is the chip Lola (supposedly) got from the breeder. She is registered and I've even been paying them annually.  I asked for them to check her chip and they couldn't find it - searched all over.  I'm pretty sure I felt it in her neck when she first came home but somehow it was MIA. They were offering free microchipping to participants in the walk so I just had them put another one.  I will have the two accounts linked just in case it somehow reappears!  Lola whimpered for a second when they inserted it but forgot all about it second later.

Phew! Decision Made!

Thank you all so much for your feedback! Personally I think it is ridiculous that there are so many different propriatary microchips and that there is no "clear" forerunner in the industry, or at least a single technology that can be read by all. I also am very frustrated that AVID has a so called "universal" scanner that doesn't read all Microchips?! Do they know what the word "universal" actually means? GAH!

This morning, when I dropped BB off, they said that they have ResQ that they can do, as well. So I ran home and did research on which one I wanted. They said to call with which one I wanted when I got home. The local shelter opened at 11am, and they called while BB was under during the procedure for my answer at 10:50. I asked for 10 more minutes until the shelter opened. The local shelter said their scanner would pick up both, but that they highly recommended ResQ. To me that is the most important person for me to care about being able to 'read' the chip. Earlier in the morning, I called our potential "new vet" and they also chip with ResQ, being able to get a yearly check makes me feel better, too.

So ResQ it is!!!

THANK YOU all so much for your feedback!!!! I seriously dont know what I'd do without you!

Yeah- It all worked out on the end. Thanks for sharing your info!
We got Darwin an AVID microchip, at our vet. I think it was 25.00, but it was on a special promotion sale or something like that...
I did not think twice about having Camus chipped (he as an AVID chip) because of my experience with Nietzsche, who had an AVID microchip when I adopted him.  One of Nietzsche's talents was his ability to "leap tall buildings in a single bound" or 6 foot fences!  He was picked up by a very kind man after having gotten out of the yard, which was completely enclosed by a 6 ft. fence.  The man took him to a local vet who scanned him and called AVID!  No way, I said "my dog is at home safe and sound".  NOT!  So I had Camus chipped with AVID and registered with my contact info as well as his Vet's contact info.
