Today while I was doing stuff around the house, I was talking to my two dogs like they were human...I was complaining about the mess that was in the den, and I suddenly realized that I was talking to my dogs, lol...Like they were going to answer me???..They follow me around and I swear when I talk to them they listen, and understand what I am saying...Am I the only one who does this? I have always done this with all our dogs, and I guess I am too old to change...But maybe the men in the white coats will come and get me..., lol
My husband and I carry on full conversations with Gracie Doodle. She is a great listener and even answers by going to the subject we are talking about or looking at it. When I mention her friends Sable and Genie she will look at the back door and then go to the window and look down the hill at their house. She doesn't miss a beat!! Of course we talk to our Doodle!!!!!!
Oh, and Gracie Doodle does not like yelling or swearing. Every now and then my husband will yell at the TV (last night) ha ha and Gracie will cower and go up to him to see if he is OK. She understands our words, tones and actions. She knows when we are sad, mad or happy.
I talk to Maggie too. When we're out running I tell her what I'm thinking and always ask her how she's doing and if she needs a break. She's not very vocal but she talks back with body language. She "smiles" when she's happy. She has a way of curling up the left side of her mouth when she's happy to see you. When she wants a back scratch she'll sit and look up at me with a waggy tail, then turn around and sit up really straight with her back directly to me. Yes, she's spoiled.
I don't like to think of them as "spoiled" as much as I like to think of them as "really cared for and loved".
Just sounds better to me. :)
Always thought you could never "spoil" something or someone by giving it too much love. Kinda like our real babies. I loved on them till they were too grown up to let me anymore. Murphy was just "telling" us last night how much he loves his daddy and me. I'm sure all our doodles "tell" us that everyday with thier doodlekisses.
Very true. She is definitely loved. We always said we wouldn't have a dog that controls our house. I wouldn't necessarily say she "controls" our house, but she sure knows how to get what she wants. She knows if she wants a backscratch all she's gotta do is ask for one and she'll get it...even if it nearly makes me late for work. And if she would rather continue to sleep on the bed instead of in her crate while we're away, she's just gotta give us the eyes and she gets to stay...now that we trust her not to get in any trouble. She often will go grab one of Eric's socks out of the dirty clothes hamper and bring it up on the bed and cuddle with it. Why the sock??? I'll never know, but it sure is cute.
The people who I think are really nuts are the ones, like my husband, who talk FOR the dog, TO you. Like: "You want to tell mommy to let you out? Go on, tell mommy you need to go out" (instead of getting up and letting him out himself) OR "Are you tearing up your mommy's towel? Oh dear, you better go show mommy what you did to her towel".( instead of just taking it away from the dog himself), OR "I think I need a bath, I can hardly stand my own stink, must be getting time for a bath soon...bet mommy is gonna give me a nice hot bath today" And it goes on and on. One day I just told him he sounds like a crazy person and the dog is probably wondering why you just don't TELL me, I'm standing right here!!!"
Don't get me wrong, he's great with Murphy, and he(DH) thinks he's very funny, and sometimes he does say the most hysterical things pretending he's Murphy talking. So I guess we're both crazy cus I laugh right with him. hahaha
