Anyone in Georgia to help with adoption of a rescue?

We have found an adorable Doodle and we'd love to get him to train as a service dog but we need someone to help us with the rescue...we are in California and could use someone to contact the shelter and maybe help assess the dog...temperament testing would be so helpful. Please let me know if you are nearby and interested in helping.

Most rescue organizations will not adopt out of state.  They do make exceptions but I'm not sure what type of "service dog" you have in mind, I don't think that is seen as a positive.  Having someone else contact the rescue is not going to help you at all.  I adopted from Georgia because I already had one doodle, the organization had multiple litters to place and I was willing to drive 10 hours one way to get the puppy.  I did have to send pictures of my home and the area for their review.  This was for a puppy that was meant to be a pet.  Service dogs do not have that same kind of life.  You might be better off trying for something closer to you.

Oh dear - is this a business for you?  Gabby Jack Ranch?  I've already seen one service dog being abused this week, not saying it is yours but I wouldn't want to help any dog down that path.  :(

Jacque is a long time breeder, well known in the doodle breeder community, and she does train service dogs. IMHO she is reputable. Whether this rescue idea is a good one I don't know.

Thank you so much for this comment...yes, we have been doing this for many years and we do not normally look for service dogs from rescue sites. This is a unique situation and a unique client that is using the dog as a psych dog, not a mobility assist dog and so the dog will be well loved and socialized.

I would not even consider this if it was not something that we could feel good about. Our trainer has been training for over 30 years (service dogs) and she has a very good understanding about what is needed. She does not use punishment, only positive training methods and she agrees with me that Doodles are sensitive, social creatures. Her own service dog is a Doodle so I am confident that we will do what is right for this boy...if not, we wouldn't try. :o)

Hi Jane, I appreciate your concern and your protective response. Believe me, we love our dogs and would never put them in any type of harmful or stressful situation. In fact, we focus on the milder cases of disabilities and we take into consideration the well being of the dog as much as the well being of the person.

Rest assured that any dog in our program will be loved, protected and social...

Jacque - I don't know you but I'm sorry - nothing about this sounds right.  You are a breeder - in CA - you would have no need to try to get a dog from GA.  Gabby Jack Ranch - this is a business right?  You say the details have been worked out - guess we'll never know since we don't know what rescue you are talking about but there is more going on here than is being said and it doesn't pass the smell test to me.

IMHO a rescue, no matter the breed, should not be considered for a service dog! I have had so many fosters through my house and not one of them would make a good service dog. They all have some kind of issue, mostly lack of trust since they have been bounced around so much. I don't know of any shelter/rescue that would adopt a dog out knowing that they dog is being considered for a service dog.

the humane society where  live would adopted a dog out to anyone - the dont ask any questions, or even read the form you fill out.

But  agree, a rescue probably wouldnt make a good service dog, especially if its older.

Adrianne, I understand where you are coming from but my experience with Doodles, service dogs and placements helps to guide me. We are not doing this haphazardly, we are very cautious and sensitive to the dog. Our program protects the dog...we are not doing this lightly.

This is not our normal situation and we are being very cautious and taking every precaution.
