Toby is getting neutered on Feb. 24. I know I've already posted this. I am a newbie with male pups. It has already been confirmed by the vet that he has only one descended testicle. With reddened cheeks I ask - should I be able to spot "something"? When Toby is flat out in the doodle pose on his back, I see nothing. I am afraid that perhaps both his testicles are M.I.A., and the surgery will be more invasive than ever. I contacted my breeder - she said they've never had a pup with only one down, and to keep her posted. He's over six months - one would think something would be visible by now? Nothing. This morning I even gently palpated the area, and felt nothing. Hmmmmm.
Even tho testicles descend, they are still pretty mobile. When it's cold or they get "excited" they can move up (not completely into the inguinal canal/groin sheath) so that you can't see them as well but you should still be able to feel a little bump.
This does feel sort of funny writing this. It's not like I feel up my dood or anything, LOL
I honestly don't remember with Dexter - he was only 5 months when we got him fixed. We got Kirby when he was 13 months and you couldn't miss his one very large testicle!! He did only have one descended one and his surgery was really not much worse than a normal neuter. The vet said they found the undescended one easily and his recovery didn't seem any different from Dexter's.
Thanks - it's Mommy worry. :) I know vets are very accomplished, and this is a basic procedure for them. I just hope I can keep Toby semi-quiet for the 10 days following surgery. Should be interesting.
That was definitely the most "painful" part of neutering for us, lol. Poor Oski was just squirming with all this puppy energy (we got him neutered at 4 mo) but were supposed to keep him away from the dog park or even long walks for 14 days. They were the longest 2 weeks of my life! Let's just say everyone was thrilled when he could run & wrestle with his buddies at the park!
I had to smile at this....Grover, 8 months now, was the same way. Ready to play with Scrappy as soon as we got him home. I just kept a good eye on him...no stairs, not too much jumping or rough-housing...no heavy lifting;)....etc. My vet wouldn't have been happy either, but there was no way to keep him down. He had dissolving stitches and they seemed to heal quickly, too.
Funny thing, I was just mentioning this to someone, Scrappy..a female...was spayed and just naturally laid low for a week, taking her time to heal and you really felt sorry for her discomfort. It seems that the spay is so much more invasive and painful for them. Grover, was Grover, and didn't miss a beat ......So why did my vet send home PAIN meds for HIM and nothing for HER?? Seems a bit biased when I look back on it. I love my vet and never really thought about it until recently, when I was cleaning out a cabinet and found the meds (that Grover never needed),
.......Next time I go in I may ask...is it a male chauvinist thing or what?
hehe...well we kept Dexter "quiet" for a good 7 days, but then when we had two 1-yr old doodles it was impossible. They were wrestling 4 days following Kirby's surgery. I'm sure our vet would have had a cow, but we kept it short and tried to keep them from getting too rough.
Honestly neither of our doodles acted like anything had happened the next day and totally wanted to play.
I was a nervous doodle mom too - it's totally normal!!
I was told that I would not be sent home with pain meds, because it makes the dog think he feels better than he actually does/should, and allows him to be more active earlier, not allowing enough time for healing. Thing is, Toby tells me he needs to go out by putting his paws up on the back door, so we'll see how it goes. That's how he tells me he needs to come in too. I guess he'll just have to be out on a leash for a bit.
My brother has two female boxers, and the younger one was spayed, and racing around the next day. There was no way they could keep her still, so they didn't even try. She was fine.....
I know the worrying part...I think we all do it. I worry more for my doodles than I ever remember worrying about my kids! Maybe it's because they can't tell us things.
I hope the day comes and goes for both of you quickly. Everything will be fine and the recovery goes really quickly, at least it did with our male, Grover......more so than with our female, Scrappy. Usually if they feel up to playing, it's safe to say that it's okay at that point...just nothing extreme.
Wishing you luck!
