I am in New Orleans, visiting my family and my sister, who owns two doodles, watches her while we are here.  Ginger loves my sister's house and her doodle cousins, Jax and Bandit.  Ginger knows the people there and has always felt comfortable.  My son and I go over every day and spend time with her.

HOWEVER....

Since she has been there she has:

1.  Counter surfed and and pulled a box off of the counter and ate 4 doughnuts.  She does not do this at my house, although one time she did eat my husband's waffle when he got up to get butter.  (I was mad at my husband at the time, so I was secretly happy about it!)

2.  Ate a hamburger bun off a table.

3.  A packet of hot chocolate mix off the counter.

4.  A cheese sandwich off a low table.

Ginger is on the small side, weighing just 22 pounds, so it is quite a jump for her.

No one sees her doing this so it is hard to correct her.  I am so worried that this is now a problem.  Does anyone have any ideas on how to stop her from this annoying (and embarrassing, for me) habit?  My sister is so generous to help out over the summer and I don't want Ginger to be a "bad" influence on her two dogs.

Thank you

Pam

LOL, too cute to have done anything wrong!

Oh my goodness.  They are so cute!

Sorry, Ginger, You look guilty. We had counter cuisers for 20 years. We did have to keep the counteres cleared. Food was s

I love this picture, counter surfer or no counter surfer.  Riley did it for the first time the other evening and ate my dinner which was on the table, he left the rice and veg, obviously not to his liking.  I usually don't leave anything out.  I did have a cocker spaniel who was a counter surfer par excellence so after trying everything I made him a tabasco sandwich and left it out for him.  He didn't do it again ; )

Oh Nicky, if only it could be that easy. But I will try it. My luck is they will both love it and I'll be back to square one.

Being from New Orleans, Ginger would probably enjoy a Tabasco Sandwich!!

Clearly Ginger thinks she can get away with this behavior because she figures two others to blame. She is obviously smart!

Calla knows better but I never leave food where she can get at it. Just easier that way. Just yesterday I found a shredded plastic bag the food had been in. Too late for consequences though.

We used a penny bomb. Put 5 pennies in a soda bottle and threw it near her if she put her paws on the counter. I purposely left things on the counter so we could practice. It took about 3x and she never did it again. I could leave anything on the table or counters and she would not touch it. I also practice putting Hors d'oeuvres on the coffee table (which is right at nose hight for my doodle). I put turkey or hot dogs on the table and tell her to leave it, we practice every now and then so when we have company she knows the food on the table is not for her. I had a party the other day and had shrimp and pigs in the blanket on the coffee table and she didn't even sniff them. I think the best way to prevent these unwanted behaviors is to practice. We also have a spot that Charlie goes to while I prepare food and when we eat.
