I don't like the beards esthetically and they get wet and drippy. I keep both my doodles short under the chin.
I love the beard
Neither of my two doodles have beards, I personally don't like the look and beards get wet and dirty quickly, as you have noticed too :) I also have the groomer shave their feet to minimize the amount of dirt they drag in from the yard, and we keep their hair short. It's all about dirt control at our house!
I personally think a beard makes a doodle, well, a doodle!  In my opinion, without the beard they look like a poodle.  I have 2 requirements for my groomer......don't touch the beard or the puff on top of the head!  I think it makes them unique  =)  Maybe just trim it a bit shorter if it gets a little messy?  Looking at your profile pic, I personally love Tobey's shaggy look!
I totally agree with Lindsay. Chloe loves when you run your fingers through her beard!
And while Olivia's beard can require lots of maintenance (as she always has dirt and food in it), we wouldn't know if she was drinking water all day without her beard.  There wouldn't be trails of water throughout the entire house.  Of course, when Olivia drinks her water, she makes sure that she wanders throughout the house.  E.T. (aka: Olivia) we know where you are!!!!!!!!!!!

The water bowl drinking severs two purposes:

1. to get a drink

2. the beard gets washed.

That is how I look at wet beards-- glad that the beard is sometimes wet.  Self-cleaning in my mind  :)

The doodles sure look cute in the morning when the beards are really dry.

Too funny.....Joanne!  you crack us up!  Our Doodle, Olivia's beard is dry sometimes during the day after I keep sticking to the floor, go crazy and decide to wipe her beard with a paper towel which she hates, hates, hates, by the way!

We trimmed Darwin's beard down to about 1/2" and it looked great, even with all of his other fluffy hair. Before we cut it, it was 3"-4" long!  It was getting really stinky, and it was wet all of the time. I love him without it and I think we might keep it shorter most of the time now. I think he still looks plenty "doodley"

Me too!
The very first time, I trimmed Olivia's beard myself, I really did a chop job and my sister made a face like she had no teeth in her mouth.  She was imitating how Olivia looked.  I got so upset after spending lots of time grooming Olivia.  I almost cried since I knew myself that Olivia did look like she had no teeth in her mouth with the real short beard.  Since then, I am very careful about how I trim her beard.  And I told my sister, that she is an A!!H)l@
Darwin definitly looks like a Doodle that He is!!!!! I think i will try to trim Tobey Chin a bit...When the snow goes the mud will be here!!!
