Our 11 week old slept in the crate for several weeks and did fine.  Then Hurricane Sandy struck and we wound up letting him sleep with us.  That was really fine, he settled in and we all slept.  Then, out of the blue, he started to jump off the bed and sleep at the foot of the bed, on the floor.   Just curious, since I thought a dog would want to stay in the middle of the "pack".  He is 6 months old now.  Good boy, too.

My guess would be that he is getting too hot in the bed!

Annie LOVES sleeping in the bed with us, but yes, as Lucy said - when Annie gets too hot with all of our covers and pillows, she will first roll onto her back with her belly to the breeze... then she will go lay on the cold floor.  After awhile, she will come back in bed.

Another thought might be that he feels like he has to guard the 'den' and that could be why he is sleeping at the foot of the bed?  Does he bark to alert you of things?  He may have that protective streak going, and wanting to protect you..  or he's really hot in the bed, LOL.

Or, if he got used to sleeping on a harder surface in the crate, it might just be more comfortable for him to be on a harder surface to sleep, since he's used to it?

He does not seem to have any guard instincts yet!  I am thinking its the heat issue with all the body warmth from  us.  I think I can trust him now, but initially I got nervous that he was going to pee. Thanks for your comments.

Many dogs are happier on the floor but near you--they do seem to get hot. The one doodle we have in our room starts on the bed, jumps down to the floor after a while, but is up on the bed again in the morning.

Gavin is not allowed on the bed.  He starts out sleeping at the side of the bed, then moves to the foot.  If he gets too hot there he will go lay on the bathroom tile to cool off, then return.  I will bet it is a heat issue too.

Both our doodles are off and on the bed all night.  Some dogs even prefer to sleep in the doorway or on tile.

Thanks everyone, heat issue makes sense.  We had no heat upstairs last night ( NO idea why-downstairs ok) and he seemed to stay on the bed more since it was "crisp" in the room.

Now you know how to KEEP him on the bed!

LOL, "sorry Mom, I know you asked the DKers for feedback on my sleeping on the floor, but I'm going to make a liar out of you tonight!"

My Quincy usually sleeps most of the night on the hardwood floor despite being allowed on the bed and having his own bed two feet away. I used to worry about him sleeping on a hard surface all the time but I'm over that.  I think he just gets too warm on the bed, he does get up for short periods but doesn't stay long unless the room is really cold. ( I sleep with the window open even in winter, it's an age thing.)  :>)

Love the name Quincy for a doodle- it's so lyrical and fits his personality

My Springer spaniel settles at the foot of our bed and never moves.  Ned, on the other hand sleeps lots of places and changes several times during the night.  He travels from the foot of  the bed to the middle, to the floor, to the dog bed, to another bed, to the couch, to the bottom of the stairs, to the tile floor  and on and on.  He isn't restless, he just likes change.

We had a lab that stayed put all night, (or else stretched and knocked my son on the floor once or twice) so I guess that's why I was surprised Quincy moves around so much.  But from all the responses, he is not alone!
