There has been a beautiful young varied thrush around our place the last few weeks and I have been enjoying watching him.  Then yesterday he flew into our window and was knocked out.  I went out to get him and Zeppo ran past me and grabbed him.  I tried to get him to put the bird down and when he did, I picked up the bird and Harpo jumped up and grabbed him out of my hands.  They pulled him back and forth like a toy until he was definitely dead.  I was so mad at them.

Lynda!

Poodles are bird dogs.

I'm sorry, but that is what they were originally bred to do but you know that already.

As a bird lover, I hate to see it, but it's nature.

......Traditionally the Standard Poodle, the largest of the subtypes, was a retriever or gun dog, used in particular for duck hunting and sometimes upland bird hunting.

I'm sorry you had to experience this and lost a beautiful bird you enjoyed watching.   It would upset me also but know that they are just animals

Yep.  My husband said the same thing.

It's always sad but birds are definitely prey and dogs are dogs.

I didn't know poodles were bird dogs. I learned something. But dogs in competition for a prize object is a whole different dynamic than one dog after a bird.

That's so sad and I can understand being mad but it is their instinct!  Just hard to watch!  We used to have a cat that would have her perch by our big front window and just wait for a bird to hit it!  We would often race outside when we heard a bird hit the window to see if we could rescue the bird before our cat got it!

Oh Lynda, you must have felt such panic, and so helpless. Yet there they are the doodles that you love so much. They have no clue that playing with the bird isn't supposed to be fun.... a big no no! I get it, because Finnley would do the same exact thing.
Last spring a feral cat must have been in my back yard, and gave birth to a kitten. Then, I let Finnley outside, not knowing. She was frolicking through the yard with something in her mouth when I called her in. It was a brand new, still wet kitten! My heart sank when she dropped it in my hand. Miraculously  it was still alive, and she didn't hurt it (that was totally a fluke) so I dried it off and warmed it up. The SPCA took it and put it with a nursing mother. Happy ending... this time.
I do NOT look forward to a next time.

I'm so sorry that you had to go through this. It is tough to be an animal lover, the conflict between a dog's instincts [and breeding] and our wish to protect another being.

Yes, Ginger found a dead bird in my neighbor's yard and became very aggressive when another dog came near. I had to trick her with a favorite treat to get it away from her. Sometimes I forget that she really is a dog because she is so smart and sweet.

Boris jumped the fence and  found a tiny feral kitten from next door last year and brought it in his mouth into the house...luckily it was unharmed and It took some very severe 'drop it' words from me to get him to let it go..I got a terrible shock, luckily he didn't hurt it and I was able to go into the next door garden shed where it came from and put it back.

My two cats were brought into the house by my husband's dog!

They are still here, almost two decades later

Lol - I wonder if your husband's dog ever regretted his decision!!!

Never. Best buds for life
