Im not sure where to really start. We noticed Sophie was bleeding from her gums after playing over the holiday weekend with kids an another dog. we irrigated and made sure nothing was stuck in there. Today we went to the vet to see if we missed anything. She found the purple marks all over her body and said she thinks her blood isn't clotting right and she is running a bit of a temp. We were transferred to the 24 hr emergency vet because they can do blood tests on site and she was worried about maybe rat or mouse poisoning. thank god they ruled that out right away with tests. the picture is all the tests they have done so far. Here is a list of things they found wrong and what they are doing to treat until more tests come back.

Bleeding from gums

red/purple spots over body

mild anemia

very few platelets

Sophie 10,000 platelets

normal 200,000 platelets

Treatment

steroids immunosuppressive does

doxycycline for possible tick bite infection

If anyone has any info that may help me out here on what is going on it would be very very appreciated or if you think I should post this in a specific or other areas to get the most responses let me know. Still kind of in shock that this is all happening.

I am sorry to hear about Sophie. Thee are many causes for decreased platelets but it sound like they are doing a thorough workup. Often times no etiology is found and it is thought to be a possible immune platelet destruction, which the steroids should address. I hope Sophie has a speedy recovery.

Bob my prayers go out to you and Sophie.  I am praying for a speedy, and full, recovery.  You may also want to post this in the Health & Medical Issues group, if you haven't already, because it is a wealth of information.

So sorry to hear about Sophie's problems!  Hope this is something you can get taken care of quickly.  Hugs...

Oh I am so sorry!  Hoping Sophie gets better soon :(

I am so so sorry....I am g,ad you found it in time and that your sweet baby is getting care. I can Imagine how devastated you are....I agree with F if it is auto immune the steroids should help immensely.....I am not sure if they do platelet transfusions in dogs like they do humans but if they can stop the body from destroying them ....maybe they will do that.

Please keep,us updated......I will be checking frequently for updates !

Oh dear--soo so sorry--poor girl and poor family! Let's hope they get to the bottom of it quickly and that it is a temporary condition due to  Ehrlichiosis--we have been dealing with these tick borne issues for quite a while where I live and it is becoming a big problem for both dogs and their owners!

Bob, I'm so sorry to hear that Sophie is so ill but it sounds like you are dong everything right and she is in good hands. I know there are several other doodles on DK that have this condition. I tried searching for the discussions and only found this one:

I don't know if it has any helpful info or not ...

I'll keep looking and will post if I find any others.

Prayers and positive thoughts for Sophie's quick recovery and your peace of mind.

I have no experience with anything like this, but hope Sophie is on the road to recovery soon.

I'm very sorry that Sophie is so sick, and I hope she recovers quickly and completely.

Im very sorry to hear Sophie is so sick.  I hope they can figure out what might be causing it & that she is on the road to recovery with her medications.

I'm sorry to hear what Sophie and your family are going through. I have no experience with this but prayers and hope that she'll have a quick and full recovery. The ticks have been awful this year. Please keep us updated.

Sounds scary -- hope it is nothing serious and clears up soon!
