quick update!

we got appa into the vet tuesday am with a stool sample, and he does indeed have giardia!  we are medicating him, and hoping these yucky bms will be a thing of the past soon!

he's adjusting well.  two (pee) accidents in the house yesterday, so far none today.  we've been trying to keep him up and running a lot.  still having a lot of night waking.  his crate is down in the living room.  i'm trying to decide if i should buy a second crate for our room, or move his up every night, and back down in the morning.  but other than that, we are enjoying our little 8 pounds of fluff! thanks again everyone!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

hello all!  we brought our appa home today, he's a smidge under 8 weeks.  he's has one round of vaccinations and two dewormings.

his breeder said she had him on purina puppy chow (i know, i know - i do plan to change this,  but planned to wait the recommended two weeks before starting the switch to some better grain-free stuff). she gave us a baggie to start him off with.  i went to pick up a bit more on the way home and noticed it was actually purina little bites, not the puppy chow.

so anyhow!  we picked him up at 1pm, he ate a cup of food at 6pm, and finally pooped around 8pm.  it was yellow and not firm enough for me to pick up, really.  i did, but it left a bunch on the grass, too.  then at 9:30 he had a small wet yellow poo in the house while dh was on pup duty and i was putting the 2yo to bed.

is this common on the first day home?  should i take him in?  poor guy.  i also should mention we had a 3.5 hour car ride home, so maybe a nervous belly?

I would gladly be "dropped" by a Vet or Pedi who did not appreciate my beliefs in raising my child or pet. My daughter does not vaccinate and several pediatricians refused to take her as a new patient because of her "beliefs". However, the one that we chose also "believes" in many of the other health issues she believes in like Breastfeeding and living as chemical and toxin free as possible. So it is a good match. And that is what I look for in a vet. That they at least respect my beliefs, but ideally believe the same. Not always and not 100%, but it's okay to agree to disagree politely.
i agree! i delivered 3 fr my 4 kids at home, nursed them all to (or beyond) age two, and they are all unvaxed (though they will be getting some slowly soon). after we were dropped by a ped years ago, i interviewed a ton, and i was amazed at how many didn't even want us at all! finally found a great fit who didn't 100% agree with me, but would listen to me like i was a grown up, and discuss things instead of talking down to me., but then we moved again! such is the military life!

I like you, Jenn and Sue. Women after my own heart.

;)

Good thinking on the Rx food, Sue. Here's the discussion:

Why You Should Say No to Rx Food

He is precious!  Congrats!   Hugs from us!

What a cutie!! I agree with Karen--wait a day, but no longer-- to have it checked out.

Appa's picture could be a postcard for doodles!! OMD - what a face.

I hope he feels better and this tummy issue is just stress - paws crossed!!

thanks so much!

I'm going I call and see if I can just bring him in tomorrow afternoon. so sick of the bucket system we've had going on all day. I'm sure he isn't feeling great, either. :(

He's beautiful! Good luck with him.

just bumping with a quick update!  :)  thanks so much everyone with all your help!

Glad you have an answer and appa is getting treated. Be sure to disinfect anything that comes in contact with his poop, and use baby wipes on his bottom after he goes. You may want to wash his bedding. Giardia is almost impossible to kill without using bleach outdoors, and a lot of dogs get reinfected. Don't let him drink from or come into contact with any puddles or standing water outdoors, and use rubber gloves when picking up poop. Hopefully the vet gave you Panacur and not just metronidazole, if so it should be under control within three days.
