Just adopted a female 10 week old golden doodle. We have had 3 goldens and miss them. This time, we wanted the same disposition without the shedding. The puppy we brought home is delightful. Kids love her and adapting well to crate and new home. However, she looks like a golden. That's not necessarily a problem as I love goldens, but we were wondering if the shedding would be a problem without the typical doodle coat. If I hadn't seen the parents myself, I would question whether this pup is really a doodle. Her other 2 littlermates had very slight curly coats.
You never know, but I would say you are more likely to have shedding. She will go through a coat change in a few months, and you'll be able to tell then. My doodle's coat became more curly after her coat change. She does not shed and never has though. GL :)
If its an F1 generation, ie one parent a poodle and the other parent a retriever, you can get a wide variety of coats from very straight and flat to very curly within a single litter. Its a roll of the genetic dice. That is one reason why some breeders eventually move to higher generations of doodles, to get a more consistant coat within a litter. As a generality, curlier coats shed less, but its not a rule. I know personally of flat coated doodles who dont shed and curly ones that do, so you'll have to wait and see. Different folks prefer different coats, my wife likes scruffy F1 coats, and I prefer long curls on multigens. TO each their own. Enjoy your doodle!!
look into Mendel's Theroy, it is used widely in the agrocultural industy when mixing differnt breeds of plants.
When you breed 2 differnt animals together that arent pure you will have some that look like mom, some like dad, some that will look like a blend of both. In the perfect world you would get 50% 50% of each the parents but the world will never be perfect~
Yes it is possible for your dog to have a flat coat and be a doodle, most early generation doodles do have flat coats, this typically is a hair or shedding coat. Some flat coats are fleece and will pick up some curl later but not all will.
What did your breeder tell you about your puppy's coat?
YES some doodles CAN be straight hair and shedding.
I'm guessing she's an F1 goldendoodle meaning one parent was a poodle and the other a golden. The thing to remember is that the goldendoodle is a mix...so the puppies will come out similar to how multiple children from the same parents come out: with variety! Depending on how the genetics line up in each puppy it can resemble a slightly scruffier golden and various combinations between the golden and the poodle. It's not as simple as curly = non shed and straight=shedding. There is short, medium, and long hair possibilities (curly, wavy or straight for each one). There is hair that grows like a poodles and just grows and grows and grows and doesn't shed. And there's hair that is more like a retriever and only grows to a certain length before it falls off. The most important thing to know about doodles is there is NO guarantee.
Each of my labradoodle is of the F1 generation.
Thule is far more labby and is NOT curly at all:
Rosco has super curly thighs, wavy body hair, curly neck hair, straight leg hair, and wavy on top of his head.
They BOTH shed.
My doodle is 4 months old with a shaggy (but very soft) golden coat. Most people think she is a Golden Retriever. Her dad was an apricot poodle, mom a very red golden. Looks like her coat is beginning to change - I can see some wavy little-bit darker hair under the fluffy gold. No shedding so far and I have my fingers crossed. Don't know when I'll know.
We have two doodles from the same sire but from different dams. The first doodle has some very pronounced poodle traits.
She is more poodle like in appearance; she's very agile----comfortable standing / balancing on her back legs only for fairly long periods of time. Her puppy coat started out very straight but as she has grown into her adult coat it is much tighter and wavy. Not quite curly----more kinky.
The second doodle still has her puppy coat so it's too early to tell. Her coat feels different; looks more wavy at the same age. She seems to have inherited more of her mother's traits. She has a more square snout. Her build is shorter and stouter. She keeps all four on the ground---rarely jumps in greeting or playing.
It will be interesting to compare them when they are both full grown.
Comiskey is an F1 mini goldendoodle....I would say it is VERY hard to tell what the coat will look like.....! (p.s. the only shedding she did was when her puppy coat was on its way out.....
Doodles can have straight hair but you won't know this at 10 weeks old. Yankee (my F1 GD) had straight hair as a puppy but now his hair is wavy/curly. See pics. He never shed a hair.
