In our side yard straight out the door where we let Gracie relieve herself a million times this winter, is basically dead from her urine.

Just wondering if the supplements are worth trying to change the ph of their urine?  I'm currently looking at a product called Nutri-vet Grass Guard Max which states that it is digestive enzymes.

I Would never recommend changing the pH of your dog's urine for any purpose other than a medical reason. It is a bad idea!

I agree with F.

You might consider creating a kind of fenceless dog run in that area with pea gravel or river rock  instead of sod. I did that in my side yard and I love it; it also cuts down on mud being tracked into the house.

Agree!

We've been re-training our boy now to the pea (pee!) gravel bed, after a long winter of snow and peeing anywhere! Or we run him down the hill when we know we can expect number one. And good boy has decided his spontaneous pees will go in the groundcovered beds. I think he gets the - no grass- idea, now! :-) Unfortunately, I have to watch his play dates, too! Those brown spots are so ugly. Once the temps get more consistent I will reseed. I just looked out the window to hail, though. Sigh...
Rather than going that route, maybe you could consider laying in pea gravel. That's what we did in our side yard and it works great for a designated potty area.

I planted 3 - 1 foot arborvitae at the back our of side yard and spread river rock around them.  Charlie likes to his leg on them and Beau (who has not learned to lift his leg) continues to pee very near them.  The great thing about Beau is that his urine does not discolor the lawn.  Charlie on the other had can make a beautiful yellow spot over night! LOL  I too am against the supplements, and I do not think trying to change your dogs ph is a good idea.  At the very least please consult your vet first!

JD loves to pee on or near evergreens, lol, they are his toilet of choice. Yew is his favorite, but he's very fond of the arborvitae, too. I also have some planted near his potty area.

I'm glad to read so many have done river rock or pea gravel.  I'm considering doing this in a section of my backyard that's the "potty spot" - which is now full of dead grass / almost-no-grass-left spots.  It seems to be from little Beasley.  I *meant* to reseed last fall, and then again this spring - but alas, the grass seed fairy has not delivered my grass seed yet.  Maybe this weekend!

This might be an odd question, but for those of you with rock beds, do you routinely spray down the area and/or turn with a rake, or does the rain help with cleaning?  (I'm not talking about the poo, lol - I know that would get picked up.)  For some reason, I think I'd feel the urge to keep the rocks "clean" even though I know my girls potty all over the grass and I don't want to "clean" that.

Hi Julie, I never hosed it but I don't remember it smelling yucky on the pea gravel, even during heat of summer, does anyone else? Gravel aids drainage, so it's a good thing. It actually wound up being pretty darn cheap for us to install - if you purchase from a local yard and ask them to deliver rather than hiring the landscaper. We did lay weed proof fabric first and wheelbarrowed and shovelled it ourselves, but very worthwhile. We also edged with larger rock so the stones wouldn't "travel" into the grass. :)

I don't hose mine and I never smell a thing. There is soil and sand underneath and it has excellent drainage.

Thanks for the replies. I didn't research the supplements and should have before posting.

However, the yard there won't be changed so I guess it will just be an area of dead grass.
Our other dog's urine did not change the grass like this. We had some spots, but this is huge and that's why I was seeking alternatives. The supplements were the first thing I found.
I have moved her around to different spots, so hopefully it won't be as concentrated to one area.
