My boy, the Klutz!!!

Duke has a sweet, loving disposition but boy is he hazardous to my health!  Here are a few examples of recent displays of klutziness.

While we were on vacation recently, Duke injured me quite a few times.  I wanted to shoot  some video of him playing at the Great Sand Dunes in Colorado.  I was probably about 30 feet or so from him when I called his name.  I saw he was running toward me so I turned my back to him and kept walking.  BIG MISTAKE.  He hit me full speed and took my legs out from under me.  I landed on my behind..HARD...right on my tailbone on the hard packed sand.  It jarred me all the way up my spine and my teeth clacked together.  (I am now starting to feel better and it doesn't hurt as much as what it did.)  Luckily it didn't bother me much when I was walking.  Just sitting, standing, and squatting.  The next thing he did was a couple days later.  I was sitting on the ground watching the dogs play at the base of a waterfall.  Duke picked up a stick, started running toward me and scratched it along the side of my neck!  Later he came up to stand beside me, I was still sitting on the ground.  Something grabbed his attention and he jerked his head around and hit me right in the mouth giving me a fat (bleeding) lip.  The day after we arrived home from vacation, Duke and Sheba were playing in the back yard.  Next thing I knew they were running toward me and Duke almost plowed me over again!!  I was able to lift up one of my legs and jump to the side to get out of their way.  That sure didn't help the pain in my tailbone!  Today I was playing with Duke.  He raised his paw up and scratched me down my face. (He's done this many times)  ARGH!!!!  These are just a few examples of my boy's less than graceful moves.  I could write a book!  How about you, do you have a klutzy Dood?

In another discussion I asked for suggestions on a collar that would make Sheba look more girly.  I haven't chosen on for Sheba but I did see one that may fit Duke.  What do you think?

In all fairness to Duke my hubby and I do have our moments of klutziness.  On vacation, Hubby was crossing a river and holding onto our good camera.  He was almost made it across to the other side but slipped on a slippery rock and he and the camera went under.

Camera no longer works.  While sitting by a pretty lake (still on vacation) I sat on a fishhook.  Hubby got it out. By the way, this has nothing to do with klutziness but more a matter of some of the dumb things that happened on vacation.  A stone flew up and hit the windshield of our vehicle.  It's now in the shop getting a new windshield!

Got any funny stories to tell???

YES, Darwin is a klutz. I am actually quite nervous to take him to our dog park that has agility equipment, as I am worried he'll run into one of the poles or something! He does alright, but if he speeds up to a run, he tends to run into things, trip, slip, fall down, you name it! Sometimes he won't be looking ahead of himself as he walks, and bumps his head on the door frame. It's funny, but kind of confusing. Aren't Goldens and Poodles supposed to be agile? :-)

I was standing around at the dog park one day, and he wasn't looking and smashed into my legs. I hyper-extended my knee and it hurt SO bad for a long time! now I watch him carefully!
You had me laughing when I read your description of Darwin!!! I would love to see Duke and Darwin get together. It would be hilarious! He sounds just like Duke!!! Duke was running in the yard today and tripped and rolled several times. I wish I had a dollar for all the times I saw him do that!!

I know of a lady who had a doodle who was over 100 lbs. I hadn't seen her in a while, so when I did I asked her how Bear was doing. She said they had to rehome him as she had BOTH knees replaced from him running into her!! (He now has a great home in Indiana.) Gosh, that would be like being hit by a freight train!!! I felt sorry for her as I know she and her husband loved Bear. Also, they were surprised he got that big. The breeder told them he would be about 70 - 80 lbs. I would have loved to have Bear! I wish I would have known they were rehoming him.

Glad your knee is feeling better Camilla!
I'm so sorry you've had all these injuries ( I know how bad it hurts when you land on your tailbone, it happened to me once and that's the only time in my life I've ever actually fainted), but I can't help laughing at klutzy Duke! All the world loves a big, clumsy, bumbling doodle! I'm sitting here reading this and going "Ooh, ouch! Hee hee hee! Ooh, no! Ha ha ha".
I don't feel bad confessing this to you, Ann, 'cause I have a sneaking suspicion that you maybe laugh, too, even when he hurts you!
Jackdoodle has gotten me with that big head many times- he has a head like a moose, and when that skull hits your cheekbone, wow, you see stars! But other than that, he's fairly graceful for a big doofus dog.
I hope all of your injuries get better soon and the klutziness in your life improves. Too bad you can't send doodles to ballet class like you do with klutzy kids. Duke in a tutu...ROFL! How's that for an image?
OMG, you fainted!!!! Wow!! I didn't come close to fainting, thank goodness! Maybe because while I was on the ground waiting for Mike to help me up, the dogs were climbing on me because they though I was on the ground wanting to play with them. I kept pushing them away but they kept coming back. It was a relief when Mike finally pulled them off! It hurt so bad that I couldn't even speak for a little while.

I'm glad to hear that Jack is isn't as hazardous to your health as Duke is to ours. Not only is Jack incredibly handsome, he's also agile! I'm going to send Duke to live with you for a little while, what do you think? Duke needs a mentor and I think Jack can help him!

You're right, I did laugh but it was after the pain subsided some! lol Mike certainly got a laugh out of it!

Duke wearing a tutu? What a hoot! That would be hilarious!!! Don't tempt me!!

I don't know if you saw this video but check out Duke when he is playing with Sheba on the patio. He stumbled and landed on his neck. At the end of the video he plows Sheba over. http://www.doodlekisses.com/video/and-i-love-her
Oh, yes, I've watched that video many times. Duke has the funniest little bounce, almost like a hop! He definitely does look klutzy in that one! And we would love to have him here! I don't how much Jack could help him, unless he needs remedial work in tennis ball catching, lol!
He leaps like a deer. I love it. Oh yes, Duke needs help catching balls. His idea of catching a ball is letting it bounce off his head!
Vern is klutzy and has a big problem.with judging spaces. If I open the sliding glass door to let him out and don't open the screen door at the exact same time, he charges right into the screen every time. Two people might be sitting on the couch with very little room in between them and he charges right up in the middle and plops down. I always look at him and say, "Vern, are we in your way?" which gets a tail wag or maybe even "I would like to sit in your lap right now" response. He is 60 pounds at 6 months, so that is a mighty big lap dog. The other day I had the bright idea of putting him on the sit on top kayak with me and he shifted his weight in a big way and tipped the kayak and into the water we went. Of course, I don't know what was more touching, my daughter laughing hysterically when I came up for air or my husband yelling, "Get the Kayak, don't let it get away."

He also insists on sleeping under the bed each night and then can't always figure out how to get back out. You can hear him sliding around on the floor and sometimes he sticks his paws out and we have to pull him out. The trainer at Petsmart called him "The Blonde".

The one funny story that I love to tell is about our first dog, a Chocolate Labrador, named Hershey. We lived in a townhouse and we had a chain around a tree and once in a while I would try and put her out there to do her business. She hated to be outside by herself and usually started barking before I could reach the door. Anyway, this one day I came home with the dog and kids and put Hershey on the chain to do her business. I don't remember if she saw a squirrel or what but she came up behind me and the chain got wrapped around my ankles and pulled my legs out from under me. I landed on my bottom and thought I had broken my hip or something it hurt so badly. While I am laying on the ground in agony, my oldest daughter says to me "Hey, can you throw me the keys, so we can get in the house?" I think I said something like "Sure, just let me pop my hip back into place." My kids might have a different version of my response.
I really feel like I know Vern--and Love him : ) If you ever get sick of him--send him over to my house. I even have a kitty that might like him.
Ha ha ha ha! Oh, I needed a good laugh today! Thanks for sharing your story! By the way, I love your dog's names!

This goes on my list of funniest DK posts ever! I laugh every time I picture those paws sticking out from under the bed!
The idea that I might have had experiences similar to what you have had is the reason I chose to get mini doodles. Maggie is our klutz. So often she fails to get the back end up when she jumps up onto the sofa, trips up the stairs and skids on the hardwood floors. I was in the kitchen the other night when I heard a big bang... Maggie had been sleeping on the sofa when she fell off. I think I had better invest in carpeting just to protect her from herself.
Another great post! I love these stories!! I wasn't smart enough to get a mini doodle! : )
