Apologies for the poor photos, my mom sent me these and her phone has a crappy camera! So, I hope you can see these well enough to help :)

Her friend just got an F1 Goldendoodle puppy, and it's their first-ever dog. My mom is helping them out since she's very dog-experienced and is head over heels in love with the Doodle breeds now because my Socrates (her grandpuppy!)

They are wondering if his tail is docked, because it looks so short compared to mine. The female was the poodle, male was the retriever in this case, not sure if that makes a difference?

Here's a photo of a couple of miniature poodle pups ate 8 weeks; one of them is now a champion. Notice the length of the tail at 8 weeks, in proportion to the pup.

These tails are docked:

This tail is natural:

Perhaps the pup had an accident resulting in his tail being amputated?

yes, that is docked--sometimes a pup has a crick in the tail and it goes off at a 90 degree angle--they will often dock a tail like that--surprised the breeder didn't mention if up front--well, no, I guess I am not surprised. :( But that is a  cute pup!

I agree that it's not the  "normal" length of a doodle tail. It may have been docked or sustained damage which required removing a portion of the tail or it could be a birth anomaly.  It seems odd that it wasn't mentioned  and explained at the time of purchase.  He's really a cutie though!

It looks docked to me.  Both of our doodle tails are docked but I think they may be a little shorter.  We are getting a new puppy in a few weeks and had the tail docked on our new one also.  The breeder we have gotten our doodles from asked us if we wanted our new little ones tail docked and we said yes so out other 2 would wonder where their tail was:)

Who does the docking, chopping off of part of a puppies tail. Is it a breeder or a vet? In Ireland it is illegal for anyone to do it and as it's an obvious thing to see Im glad to say that it isn't seen anymore here.

Thank you all for your input! I also thought it looked docked, and I've wondered why they couldn't just ask the breeder...it's not my friend so I can't really ask but I'm curious to try and find out!

Aw...very cute puppy...well at least it's tail won't knock their martini's off the patio tables!

Less and less docking of tails and cropping of ears is occurring or even legal.  You especially notice this change in pure breeds like  Dobermans', Boxers' and Schnauzers' ears because faces show more.  I do have to admit that I love my Springer's little docked tail, but if it hadn't been done, it would be just fine with me. On the other hand, doodle tail are gorgeous and I am glad mine have their full length, but again, if they had been docked due to a health reason, I would be fine with it also. Some breeders seem ignorant in the differences in a doodle 'look' vs a Poodle or Cocker  'look.'

Our puppies tail was docked by a vet at three days old when they went in to have their dew claws removed. After having 3 labs i do not mind that their tails were docked. Our breeder offers you a choice docked or undocked. We opted for docked due to the fact our other two have docked tails. I think doodles are pretty w or without their tails long:)
