Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

I know there have been lots of discussions about how much work doodles are and how they take time and LOTS of training.  For many doodles, including ones I've bred that is true.  However, does anyone have a doodle that is pretty well behaved by nature?   ....House trained really fast, doesn't jump up much and is generally very eager to please?  Overall I think our doodles that live with us are this way.  Maybe I'm very tolerant, but it seems that others have to have a similar experience.  About four months ago I placed a pup in a guardian home with a family that had never owned a dog and has three kids (5, 7 & 10)  We talked at length and I prepared them for all the work a pup would be. Every time I check in with them (usually once a week)  they tell me how amazing she is and how easy she is. She house trained in a week, doesn't jump, rarely nips and stays out of the living room without putting gates up.  When I go to visit I see these things for myself, so I know their not just saying it to appease me.

My sister is another guardian home.  She had never owned a dog and did great!  This pup is bigger and did jump up some but overall she has a very easy going temperament and my sister always says that she's easier to raise then the cat. :o)

This last year we've raised two pups together that are from two different breeders and they have never been "bad."  Sure they had accidents sometimes and will get into food if it's left low but overall they are really very good!  Our golden retriever has eaten two pairs of glasses and tracks in mud like no tomorrow, so not all my dogs are good all the time. :o)  And yes, we do have our days!

Anyway, sorry to be so long.... I'm just wondering if anyone else has really good doodles?  I think of doodles as being very lovable, intuitive, smart and eager to please. (Even as pups.)   Am I nuts or do other DK-ers have dogs like this?

In the house, both my doodles are stellar examples of great doodles - but we didn't get either one from puppies so we missed out on the puppy stages of chewing and potty training.  Outside we still have some work to do on recall but neither one jumps up and they only rough-house with each other.  Both are real snuggle bunnies who think of themselves as lap dogs....just haven't found laps big enough!  They settle for being close to us, either on the couch or as foot warmers.  Neither one even counter surfs and will not take food off a tv tray either.  Clifford did chew a DVD once, but we never figured out why.
I should note that Carole's Rose is an "exceptional dog" and is about as bad as they get, LOL.  She has such an amazingly sweet temperament and is so human like that you can't stay mad for long though.  The amount of toilet paper, underwear and socks that dog has eaten is astounding!  We love you Rose!!

April~ You are being so polictically correct calling her "exceptional" !!!  She is a little STINKER!!!!!!  I will say though that she has never eaten toilet paper while living with us! Maybe she doesn't like the brand we use! LOL And yes, the amount of underwear and socks that dog eats and passes with ease (one way or another) IS astounding!  No matter how well it is hidden she'll find it!  We truly have put locks on the outside of the kid's bedrooms and a slide lock on the pantry door.  She laughs at both and goes in at will!  I kid you not!  She can open the slide bolt like she was Houdini!

But---- I will say without a shadow of a doubt that she does have the most amazing sweet temperament and we have NEVER been mad at her EVER!  She truly bats her lashes and we melt and all is forgotten....Rose is an incredibly intelligent dog and knows without a shadow of a doubt what she's doing (good and bad! LOL).  I would have loved to have had a hand in her puppy training ,and taken some credit for it , but April had the honor of raising her and fate brought her to us when she was 14 months.  If we could clone her we would in a heart beat....she is a remarkable family member and we treasure her and can't imagine life without her.  She may be bad to the bone with her funky eating habits but we love every ounce of her!

Our other doodle, Gaston-Cramer is 3 months older than Rosie and was bred here in NC. We had unprecidented access to him as a puppy as part of a Senior Exit Project our daughter was involved in with school.  We were there to see his eye's open and take his first steps.  Because of that, we began his training from week one and had quite an  unusual jump start on things .  He was very easy to train but we of course had our moments of mouthing etc when he was little and his fetish was shoes.(which thankfully he's outgrown!)  He has always been an absolute love sponge and has welcomed Rosie into our family like they were long lost litter mates (which they weren't!)  They are truly soul mates.  Coupled with our maltese Bindi they are truly the "Three Amigos".

LOL  Not sure I remember the original question as I've rambled so much LOL but I will say that in our experience, raising our doodles has been an absolute pleasure and our lives have been forever changed because of them.  We would do it again in a heart beat!

Oh good....you're giving ME credit for her puppy training, or lack thereof! Honestly she was so stinkin cute that we were really bad about following through! We were too busy "talking" for her, doting on her and tending to her store. :o)

LOL  Oh I AM giving you credit!  She sits on a dime, comes when she's called, walks beautifully, never has met a stranger, never had an accident, doesn't jump up on a sole and is the most gentle creature I've ever met!She doesn't beg at the table, she barks only with intention, greets everyone gently....I can go on and on!  I can NOT take credit for that at all!  Despite her being so stinkin' cute, you obviously put in hours of work with her.  I had nothing to do with who she is.  We are just honored to continue raising her :)

*Oh, and the "store" has closed.  Unless she "recycles" it and she "deposits" it outside naturally, all inventory remains in the house now.  She has now learned the word "DROP"! LOL

Hee, hee! :o)  I'm glad the store has closed!

I'm glad we at least taught her something good that she retained!  There was certainly no lack of attention or love given!

I have an extremely easy doodle, but like Kim, I got him as an adult. From the time he entered my house at the age of 14 months, he's had the run of the house and has never had an accident, never counter-surfed, never taken one thing out of a trash can, never jumped on anyone (the only time he jumps up is when he's catching a ball), and has never chewed or destroyed anything except a pair of rabbit fur earmuffs. He also doesn't bark much, doesn't eat starnge objects, and doesn't take things that don't belong to him. I have no idea what he was like as a puppy, but 14 months is still pretty young for a standard doodle, so I think he must have been farily easy even then.

And of course, he sheds like a German Shepherd, so grooming is a snap!

So basically, besides the thousands you've spent in vet bills, he's a perfect dog! :o)

Well, and the fear issues, lol. But those weren't his fault! He is a perfect dog, at least to me, and worth all the $, for sure!

Yes, we do! We have done training with Darwin for things like leash walking, sit, stay, come, etc. He learned them quickly and is pretty good about following our commands. As far as most behaviors like chewing, jumping, barking, etc., he has been amazing.

He potty trained very quickly and never has accidents. When he was a puppy going through teething he would chew on his toys or a few household items but never tried to chew us. Not our hands, clothes, nothing. He's never been mouthy. He doesn't bark. Not when I pull out a vacuum, not when people knock on the door, not even when other dogs bark at him. That is great for us because we live in an apartment. He doesn't jump on people. He did try 3 or 4 times when he was younger but after being told no, he quickly stopped and hasn't since.

He's not afraid of things. Fireworks, vacuums, blow dryers, he's fine with them all. He is not a dog that is nervous of new situations or people, he enthusiastically embraces new experiences. He's good with all people and dogs. He's also great with cats. He's gentle with babies and kids but also knows how to be playful with them as well. He's great at being handled and lets me touch his paws, tail, teeth, ears, etc. without complaint. To top it all off, he is very very loving and loves to cuddle with anyone who is willing. We love him! It may be silly but I'm actually nervous to ever get a second dog because I feel that there is no way we will ever find another dog as great as Darwin... :-)

Awe. Darwin!  Your mom is one lucky lady!  I think I'm a bit jealous with the "no barking".... that's really one of only two faults Tori has... but I will ignore those and say that we think she's perfect!  She trained so easily, sleeps willingly in her crate until we get up, can tell time, has a huge vocabulary of words she recognizes, has only ruined a couple of pillow corners, has never chewed on furniture and is the smartest dog we ever had!
Tori sounds like a doodle genius! Darwin only knows... 10 words or so. :-) All of our doodles are so great, and so unique. That is why we love them!
