How do I get Cooper to tolerate regular brushing? He is 5 months and he does not have mattes. I have a 2 sided brush and unless I have peanut butter on a rawhide to distract him I can not get him to let me brush him.

Any suggestions? I was hoping to spend some quiet time daily brushing him and eventually get my daughter to help in this area.

Cubbie hated being brushed as a puppy and now will just tolerate it.  Join the grooming group and do a search in past discussions there and I'm sure you'll find plenty of info to help you.  Good luck with Cooper.  :)

jack hates it but tolerates a metal comb the best..still hates it though.
I started with short sessions, with treats when he/she stayed in one place and didn't try to eat the brush. Gradually built up time. So it started with just a minute, then two.....
Mine both may not enjoy it, but will not move much while brushing. I use a Les Pooches brush and it can get scratchy, so I do half of them at a time, give them a treat and a break and do other half.
How funny I just finished brushing Zoe and she was being awful like when she was a puppy so I was thinking back when she was little. Usually I alternate between brushing and scratching her back because she loves back scratches! Or sometimes I have a toy or antler in one hand while I brush her with another

cooper hates it. but i bribe her with treats and she gets an extra yummy treat or chew after. she tolerates it wonderfully, but hates it lol

When I pick up Meg's grooming tools she runs to the living room and lays down, as soon as I start brushing she thinks she is on a massage table, stretches out and appears to be sleeping...makes me a bit jealous.  Meg has wiry hair and some fluff around her neck.  She will not allow the pin brush but loves the silicone Kong thing, a regular hair brush with nubs at the end and does all right with the one that looks like a horse scraper.  The Kong is number one though.

Bodi LOVES to get brushed!  Maybe it's his short hair cut or the brush we use.  He comes just as fast for a treat or his brush!

Stanlee does good until I get to his lower legs.  He does not like his feet done which is funny because he's great getting a nail trim.

Luna HATES it!  Probably partly because we do it so infrequently (her hair doesn't mat). I have to furmiate her every day in the Spring/Fall and she just puts up with it.  She is terrified of the slicker brush but will stand still if I'm using the furminator or wire comb.

I dont think Trixie loves being brushed...but she does like it.  I did start brushing her the 2nd day we got her...Just for a minute or 2 each day. ( I used a Mini Conair purse brush)

Also She only likes some brushes...The Slicker brush scares her- so I dont use that.

I mainly comb her now- the brush is too hard for me to get through her fur & down to the roots.

I let her lay on her side when I brush her...That is what keeps her from ending the comb session...She gets to lay & relax...if she is sitting when I comb her- She does not like it.

During puppyhood I brushed daily so it is routine and we usually do it first thing in the a.m. before we start our day.  I use the Conairpro brush which has rubber tips on their faces and Les Pooche double purple brush on the body and Les Pooche single width brush on their legs - I love these brushes.  The first time I used these brushes, I tried them on myself so I would know how they felt on my scalp and how hard to brush them.  They both seem to enjoy being brushed and having a leg massage.
