Since German Shepherds and Labrador Retrievers have extremely short hair and still shed like there's no tomorrow, I don't understand how cutting a dog's hair short would help with the shedding. The individual hairs would be shorter, true, but they would still be all over.
Of coruse, if you shaved the dog close enough that he had no hair, that would solve the problem, I guess. But how ugly would that be? I'd rather ahve the shedding and a cute dog.
Does brushing help JD Karen? When I brush Tacky (I know he is 1/15th the size), it does help his shedding.
Yes, brushing helps. But only for a little while. It's like you got all the loose hairs that were going to fall off in the next hour or so, lol. If you brushed him every hour, you'd get just as much as you did the last time.
When he shakes himself, you can actually see the hairs flying off.
I have a dachshund who sheds badly. Her fur gets embedded in all sorts of clothing articles, even underwear and socks! One time, my dad had one of her hairs stuck in his food because it had been in his sock all day. My mom had to get it out with tweezers while he whined.
I usually vacuum and sweep every other day as soon as the furballs form tumbleweeds... and I brush her outside every day. Getting her groomed seems to make it worse!!
Hello again Cherie...
I did some research since I wrote last...and came up with some other thoughts..I hope they might be helpful to you...
I found an item called "Tackzo Auto"...which is guaranteed to remove embedded pet hair from clothing...bedding...they say anything! (smile) It has a 90 day money back gaurentee! The cost of it is $7.99.
You just roll it over the pet hair and the hair will cling to the surface. Another great thing is that you can wash it over and over...so you can re_use it Many times! I suggested a lint roller to you before...and this sounds Much better and Much more cost effective.
I also saw that they have a vacuum that says it's specifically helpful to "pick up pet hair"!
It's called the Bissell Universal Pet Hair Vaccuum with Tools...
You can find both of these items at 1-877-956-PETS.
Wishing you the Very Best of Luck with the shedding problem...
Clover is a non shedder. Apollo on the other hand, sheds enough to make a pair of mittens daily. I brush Apollo weekly while he is wet with a Kong Groom Zoom. The hair doesn't fly around as much when he is wet and the rubber brush gets alot of hair out. I also have a force air dryer with no heat which I use alot too. Drying against the growth of the hair really gets it flying. Before I got a dryer I was using DH's air compressor with a fitting that controlled the air flow. I
MO the Furminator works more like a clipper blade cutting the hair. I prefer using a rake with rounded tips or a shedding blade gets more hair out. Apollo doesn't like these tools because they can hurt if not careful. He really likes the groom zoom because it's rubber and feels more like a massage.
These things lessen the amount of hair, but I still have alot fur balls everwhere. It's just part of our lifes.
