Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

So we brought this goldendoodle home with us. The golden retriever rescue took him to a vet who said he was healthy and the vet documentation says no health problems. However since bringing him home ( a 4 hour road trip) I've noticed his back feet are slightly pigeon toes when he walks and when he is running at fast speeds he starts hopping on his back feet. So now I am thinking hip displasia. I have called the contacts at the rescue and no one is returning my calls. He is the sweetest boy and I am estimating his age more at 4 or 5 not 2 or 3. I don't know what now. I don't want to return him as the place he was at was awful. I have a vet appt for him early this week. Now what?

Jenn ~ wow, he looks like a very good boy!  I am keeping my fingers crossed that there are no hip issues, but if that comes to pass, I am with Laurie and the others and will be donating to his cause.

If you have papers where the rescues Vet cleared him as healthy the insurance may take that as their starting point.  I would call and ask them what they need from you and get that all in place before going to the Vet, just like the others said.

See what the vet says and take it from there.

I agree with everyone; however, there is no guarantee that the insurance would cover this if it is hip dysplasia.  Because that is a condition that develops over a period of time versus an accident or illness that develops quickly, it would likely be ruled a preexisting condition.  I'm so hoping that this doesn't turn out to be something serious and that you're able to give this goldendoodle a wonderful new life.

PetPlan covers hip displasia. I would check the policy for any restrictions and not bring him in for it until whatever waiting times might apply.

I have a 7 year old dog that actually has been diagnosed with mild hip dysplasia when Penn hip test was done when she was young--she runs and walks fine--you can't see any issue--and my neighbor's golden doodle has a weird walk (her back feet go in circles when she trots) but she is now 8 and has no issues and loves to run and play--so i think you never know until you look at the internal structure. The things you describe could be HD though--as everyone else has said, get your insurance first!

Jenn, Keep him...give him a good life...take him to the vet and see what's what. I can tell you if the time comes and this dog needs expensive surgery, I will be the first one to chip in. We have helped other dogs before here on DK. We can do it again.

Amen Laurie, I'm with you on this one!

I am on board with Laurie's suggestion as well!

Thanks Laurie. I really love this community. Ive found some true friends on here.

We all have flaws and imperfections....just some people and dogs can hide them better :) I prefer to know what I am working with....LOL!

I love all the qualities about you Laurie. Perfect and not perfect.

I'm in to help Jenn too.
