Ruby is coming up on 8 months and starting to act super independent. She doesn't lay near me anymore while I watch TV, preferring to lay out of the room near a wall in the dining area.  It may be silly of me, but I really miss my velcro dog.  She's not completely dismissive of me, but I'm usually the one initiating the contact, e.g. I will go to her, pick her up and bring her back to where I am on the sofa.  She does follow me anytime I'm near the kitchen, but that's only because she reveres the kitchen, the giver of all things tasty.  She's still incredibly sweet when she hasn't seen me in awhile, but I miss her longing to be at my feet in the evenings. :(

I've read online that female dogs tend to be more independent and moody, while the males are big clingy babies.  I wonder if this holds true in the doodle world as well.

What about your dood? Does he/she hold true to this stereotype?

My girls are velcro and the boy goes in the other room!! And the male and one of the females are intact! I really think it depends entirely on the dog's personality. Ruby may be feeling more confident and also it may be cooler where she lies down--One of my doodles is always warm and likes to go to the coolest spot of the house.

Ned is much more cat-like as I call it.  He is not velcro at all and doesn't follow us from room to room.  He chooses whether he wants  to be by us or receive affection.  Clancy prefers to be in a room with a human and adores being petted.  He is not a lap dog or a 'leaner' though. Both doodles get hot and lay on the tile floors whether we are  nearby or not. Our Springer is our shadow dog and insists on being with a human.  All are males; all are neutered.

I think you pegged it there, Andrea, at least where my boys are concerned. Lachlan's personality is 100% poodle. There's no doubt in my mind that he loves me and he's very people oriented, but he also wants to just sit back and think. He was never a clingy puppy - from day one he was more likely to be contemplating me than to be trying to climb into my lap, not like he was scared of me but more like he was trying to work me out. "What's this thing and what do I do with it?" Here's a picture I took of him the first weekend. This is a very typical Lachlan look:

cutie pie!!

My two are ALDs but Luca is much more poodley in build. He is more attached to me though.

Andrea,

Such an interesting theory!  I think you're onto something here.  Ruby is an F1B, so her poodle-self far outweighs her golden-self.  There are so many variables that comprise their personalities: male/female, poodle/golden, etc.

hmm, by this theory Sophie is more poodly and Winnie is more golden-y, which I think fits the bill. Winnie has curly fur but sheds like a golden and has a golden build, and he is a needy mamma's boy.

Cooper (girl) was quite independent as a puppy, but over time has grown more velcroey and cuddly!
