Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum
Advise needed- we live in NY with our doodle Maizy. She is 10 months old. She is perfectly content on the leash and playing in our yard/at the park. My parents live in CT and have lots of land. They have 2 dogs that have electric fence. When we bring Maizy to CT (which is very often) where she runs around the yard like a crazy girl (into the neighbors yard)! She always listens to us when we call her back. My parents are watching her for a week this coming spring and want to get her a collar and train her with the flags and all. Would love opinions on this situation! She is a smart girl and I don’t doubt she will catch on quickly...

I would let them train her. She should behave just like their other dogs.
Your parents have made a kind offer. I'd take them up on it.
It is actually pretty simple. The collars will send a warning tone before it zaps. Place the flags right on the boundary of where the beep starts on the collar. All you do is walk her on a leash around the perimeter of the property by the flag. Walk with her between you and the flags. If she get's close enough to the flags and the collar beeps, say sternly, "NO" and call her back in the yard when she come out of the warning area, praise, praise, praise. If she keeps entering the beep area, try picking a flag up and shake it loudly at her and hollar no. (the sound will probably scare her) If she still tests the area, just let her get zapped. It's hard to take because she will probably screech, but that is the only way that it will all connect in her head. She will associate the flag with the beep, and the beep with the zap. The zap really isn't that bad, it is uncomfortable and I think it startles them more than anything. But I haven't had any problems at all with my doodles. They caught on very quickly. It only took a few trips around the yard and 1 zap, and they didn't want anything to do with it. lol I travel with my 3 dogs to my sisters quite often who also has invisible fence and all i had to do there was flag the yard the first time we took them and that was it, they know their boundaries at home and at their Aunties :) Also, if the other dogs cant leave the yard, probably she won't want to either so I think she will be fine. Good luck
Do it! She will have freedom and you will have peace of mind. A win win!
Absolutely.... I have a e-fence and a physical fence. The e-fence is to keep the doodles out of my garden and koi pond. Traiinng is key here. It took me about 2-3 weeks to feel comfortable that my doodles were trained. This training was constant and every day which is my concern with Maizy since she will not have the daily training. I would start the training now and every single time you go up there. If she goes into the neighbors yard now and is not trained 100% she can run thru the e-fence and then cannot come back into your yard because she will get corrected.
When I first trained Sasha and did not have Oliver yet, and after the two weeks + of training I still tied a long rope to her and let her roam free to see what she did for the first few days. Sasha learned really quick and so did Oliver.
I think you will do fine.... but spend lots of time training and make it fun. Follow the instructions that come with the system. I would spend about 15 minutes for each training session 2-3 times a day, you don't want to do any more than 15 minutes because you will not have their attention span. Good Luck :)
Yes-I would let them do it-then she can always be safe there once she learns!
I think it is a great idea--and you are intending to train her before she gets left there for a week right? As others have said, it takes a bit of time to train them--although I do have a friend who has a goldendoodle visit her now and then and she just stuck the collar on the dog and that was it! The dog has invisible fence at home and seemed to understand immediately when she would get a beep--no flags, no training! I guess they ARE pretty smart!
When Gavin went to Mylie's house they put her collar on him and he generalized his learning from our invisible fence at the cottage. Heard the beep, knew the boundary. He did not get shocked and did not break boundaries. They are smart!
Thank you all!!! We are bringing her to CT tomorrow and she will have her first training session! :) Wish us luck!
Good luck.
