Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

I found this ad today on the local Craigslist!!! So sad!!  :(

I don't really have a desirable car that people would WANT to steal but I didn't know that VW Beetles were either!!! We don't leave Tara alone in the car at stores even for a minute!!

Hope he finds his way home soon!!

I found another post the family put up on Craigslist in the LOST and FOUND section:

They are offering a reward and seem to care less about the car, they just want the furkid back.  One interesting point though is that in the first post they called him a Labra-Doodle and in this one a Goldendoodle?? WTD?? Maybe they did it to cover all the search options?

WEDNESDAY EVE UPDATE:

It appears the car has been found but not the doodle. :(  I know what you are thinking, Karen!!!

One must never ever ever leave any dog or child in a car. I know that it can be tempting to just "run in" for a minute but you can't take the chance. So sad.
Our previous 2 dogs were the nicest dogs but crazed barkers in any vehicle. I never had to worry about someone trying to take the car or them. Tara is so small though (20 pounds) that someone could just carry her off. People do something called "smash and dash" here. If they see something they want in a car they just break a window, grab the item and RUN!!
OMG, I feel so bad for this poor doodle & his family! I just pray that whoever took the car didn't put him out somewhere on the road. The owners must be losing their minds with worry.
I never leave JD alone in the car for a second.
I am wondering why the dog was left alone in the car, and why wasn't the car LOCKED if he was going to leave the dog in it? The only time my dogs are alone in the car is when I am pumping gas, and I pay for that at the pump. I too would have to be committed if my dogs were stolen. I hope the pup is microchipped.
Many people in this area do not lock their cars or houses!! It's crazy!!! I lock EVERYTHING! I even lock MYSELF out!! LOL!!
I too feel awful about this news. I do leave my dogs in the car for short periods of time when I run in to buy a quick item. I hope since there are two they are more intimidating. I hope they, especially Calla, would bark someone away. They so love to go places with me. I take them into the stores that will permit them inside but sometimes there are quick stops that can't accommodate them. I would hate to always leave them home and it's not feasible to do each errand on which they can't come in separately. Very upsetting news indeed.
F, I have done this on occasion, too. Murphy can only go with me on the weekend so there may be an occasional stop I have to make. He loves to go. I try to park where I can watch him. (Its also outside of New Orleans so there are very few times of the year this is even possible because it is so darn hot.)

This is very upsetting, indeed.
That's another reason I take them when i can since weather is often a limiting factor.
I did this all the time when I was doing therapy with Rosco because it was a feat to have to go home in the middle of the day, gather up my dog, do therapy, take him back, and then go back to work. So he'd come to work with me, hang out in my office until I had a patient, then hang out in the car in the employee parking lot. He's also came with me to a conference across the state and hung out in my car during the conference, with walking breaks when we got breaks. Eventually I started asking my patients' permission about having Rosco there and many would say yes. Once spring hit last year and it started warming up, though, I had to stop. Scary to think I had a Beetle too. Not that that make really matters. If someone 'needs' a car to steal, most any will do. But why the heck would they take one with a DOG! Were the windows completely tinted? Oh yeah...it was unlocked. Plenty of reason.

I realize there's always POTENTIAL for something horrible like this to happen, but it's fairly unlikely. And how does anyone travel with a dog (or more than one dog) without leaving them in the car at all? Not all restaurants have outdoors seating and you have to stop to eat, use the restroom, etc. Is a motor home considered safer? A family van?

When Clark was on his own, he and Cas went EVERYWHERE together. She'd wait for him in his car, go on road trips, etc. If he went to the grocery store, she'd come too. I'll probably get dog poo thrown at me for saying all this. I would be devastated if something like this happened to my dog(s). But does this mean I have to leave my dogs at home all the time because I don't live in a doggy dreamland where they can enter any store?
I guess I never thought about how I would travel with Darwin if I was alone. I don't know the answer to that. But when DH and I travel with Darwin, one of us always stays in the car with him and the other runs into the store or restaurant.

I have been tempted to leave Darwin in the car while the weather is cool... but I'm too paranoid. I would never be able to relax because I'm afraid of someone stealing him. That might be irrational because he's so huge... but I can't get it out of my head.
I've mostly stopped taking Rosco with me unless the trip is short and for him (training or going to PetCo for a groom) because the backseat now has a car seat for Natalie...and he's so big he really needs the whole back to himself or is forced to sit up like a person. Doesn't look comfy. I don't think I've ever been back there with him. I'm always the driver when it's just the two of us. Or on road trips, we've taken our station wagon, folded the back chairs down and all three dogs rode in the back.
Maybe I'm in denial but I think the chances of a real issue is quite rare. I think one is far more likely to get in an automobile accident in which your dog is injured than to have your car stolen with your dog in it. But we still drive cars every day, right? I'm not saying anyone SHOULD start leaving their dogs in cars more. But I don't think it is a wholly irresponsible act provided it's not warm out or otherwise an unsafe environment.

I have traveled, alone, with Rosco on multiple occasions. In such instances there is NO option but to leave your dog in the car at some point. Unless you want to pee near your car on the side of the road. We have also traveled together with all three dogs in the past and part of our trip involved visiting family or friends who either could not or would not allow dogs in their home. It was wonderful to have our dogs with us and our final destination (my mom's home) did allow dogs so I wouldn't have traded the fun we had having them with us for anything. But we also visited my inlaws who snowbird in 50+ mobile park and dogs are strictly prohibited. We took them out to a local park to walk, potty, etc...but they couldn't roam their home or outside the home.

Last fall I attended a training seminar where we were supposed to bring our dogs so we could be hands on with what we were learning. The seminar was 4 hours away for me, farther for some of the attendees. Only two people were local. We got a group rate on a dog friendly hotel and the first night all the attendees went out to eat at a local restaurant. We all had our dogs (some more than one) with us and we all parked our cars with dogs in them.
