My F1b mini gd went in for a blood test the other day for a heartworm check. My vet called today and told me they found fat in his blood and that he needed more blood work done. He said it could be a problem with his triglycerides or a few other thing's. Or if my doodle ate some dog food before his blood test that could be the reason for the fat showing up. At this point I'm not sure if he ate or not there  might have been some food left in one of the bowls.I'm praying that this turns out to be nothing! Has anyone had this happen with their dog?

Thanks barb

Well, there are always lipids (fats) in the blood. It's the levels and the types of lipids that might be a cause for concern. I think you need more information on what exactly was abnormal about her blood lipids.
I agree with Karen. For people the only good way to test blood lipids is fasting so you have a uniform baseline. I wouldn't worry too much, triglycerides are very variable with food intake. So wait for the retest.
Thanks I feel better already! He has to fast for 12 hours before his next test tomorrow!
That sounds more like it.
I HOPE he ate before the test!!!!!!
Why?
Gosh, my dogs do not routinely get blood tests and have never been checked.  In dog health, is this a problem? Is it checked enough to have any reliable statistical data?  Do dogs take an equivalent of  Lipitor?
Good questions! My dogs have never had blood work aside from heartworm tests I think.

NO Lipitor but diet and drugs are used if a dog truly has hyperlipidemia.

My Vet does a full blood work up at their first yearly check up to gather a baseline.  After that it's up us whether or not we want to repeat the testing every year or every other year.  I actually have their blood tested every six months because I'm home cooking, and I want to be sure everything looks okay.
Doggie Crestor!  LOL.  One for me and the dog.  That would be so weird.  I sure hope that it turns out to be nothing, make sure to let us know.
Please keep us posted. Keeping fingers and paws crossed that this turns out to be nothing.
