Good morning everyone,

I gave Nickie a bath two nights ago and noticed some fleas crawling around. I want to treat as soon as possible. Nickie is only 9 weeks old. We used to give our dog Lucky Advantix and it worked really well. What flea medication do you guys recommend for a 9 week old pup?

We just started our puppy on Trifexis. Some people love it, other people hate it. So far our puppy is doing great with it. He did have a bout of vomiting the morning after (which is a common side effect in small puppies), but since then nothing. I'm not necessarily recommending it because we are new to it, but you may want to look into it and have a conversation with your vet about it and other options.
I would absolutely ask your vet! Loki had come home to us with a "puppy pack" that included a starter dose of revolution because this is what the breeder used for her dogs and I double checked with our vet and that was what they liked as well. Who knows though maybe your vet recommends different products!
I've had Loki on Revolution since I got him and it's been working great and the fleas were very heavy in our area last summer. It includes heart worm preventative as well so you have to get it through a vet. Also if it helps at all a couple weeks ago I had posted a discussion asking what everyone's prefered preventatives were and a lot of people replied with a few different products they use!
We live in Seattle so fleas are a problem year round. I use Revolution on Oliver as a monthly preventative and have been very happy with it's safety and effectiveness. Oliver has never had a bad reaction and I rarely find fleas on him. On the rare occasion that he picks up some fleas, I give him a Capstar pill which kills all the adult fleas on his body in about an hour. Capstar is pretty amazing stuff but it's short term--like a flea bath in a pill--so you need to also use a monthly med too.

As this is a nine week old puppy I would not use anything that is not recommened by your vet.

I also recently heard about using Food Grade Diatomaceous Earth if you notice your pet had fleas. If they are on your dog, they are also in your house. I would sprinkle some on the carpet and dog bed for sure.  Make sure it is food grade and not pool grade. They are different. You can get it on Amazon in pet supplies or at Lowes or Home Depot in the bug spray area. But any meds I would get from the vet. Annabelle was put on Revolution at her first vet appt. She still managed to get a worm in her poop. Now she is on Sentinel. I will use Capstar with it if I notice fleas on her, plus the Diatomaceous Earth in the house. I live out in the country and with all the wildlife around in our yard, it is always a concern for me.

Is the Diatomaceous Earth safe for young puppies (10 weeks)? Do you put it on the puppy, or just the bed, rugs, etc.

With a young puppy, I wouldn't use anything without checking first with a veterinarian.
