Has Anyone Else Encountered This?

Our little Foster Girl Somer seems to want to "suckle" on a pillow.  She came with the little shrek pillow that she carries around and will lay down beside me while I'm on the computer and just suck on the corner of it.  She has now taken to doing the same thing to one of the dog beds.  She always gets it in just the right position.  She doesn't chew or destroy, just sucks on it.  I've done some searching on the internet and it seems there are other dogs out there that do it, but just hadn't seen it before and wasn't sure if it is anything to be concerned about.  They seem to sort of compare it to a toddler sucking its thumb!

I've never seen it before, but it sure is cute. I'll bet this sweet little girl is doing this for comfort....maybe it's like a "binky".

Gaston-Cramer does it ALL THE TIME! Typically he'll gather up all his stuffed animals and push them under him and just settle in. Right now his "lovey" of choice is his bunny. It goes everywhere with him! Rosie on the other hand could care less and will attempt to gut any of Gaston's stuffed toys any chance she gets! LOL Somer is just beautiful! I love her coat! it's so glossy!

Hunter does this all the time but with only one paticular toy - its a little purple bear that the breeder sent home with her. Its funny because it is the ONLY stuffed toy that she doesn't rip to shreads in a matter of moments. We call it her "baby" and if we say "get your baby" she gets it :-)

It sounds like a comfort thing to me, too. Maybe it's just soothing for her. She really is a beautiful doodle.

It is amazing what you find out on DK. Baxter does this with one particular toy. He moves his foot like he is making dough while he sucks on the toy. It is so funny. He does it when he is tired. Doodles are alike in so many ways!

I had a cat that used to do this. The vet told me it was likely because she was weened too soon, but that the behavior wasn't something I should worry about.

Ha!! You took the words right out of my mouth!! I also had a cat that used to do this. She would climb up in my lap and suck on the side of my neck. Made big old slurping noises when she did it. And the vet also told me that she was taken away from her mama too soon. Guess that makes sense.

My son's Puggle does this too. Not only dues he suckle,and not destroy the toy, he also will massage (don't know the technical word for this) the pillow like I've seen kittens massage the mothers breasts when they are nursing. Actually I think it's kinda cute!

Somer is soooo sweet. She seems to be doing very well. I agree with everyone, it's like her comfort blanket.

Darwin doesn't do this but I know other dogs that do, I think it's sweet!
