Canidae sent a newsletter detailing the "sport" of treibball (link to blog), it seems really cool. Kind of like 'dog soccer'. Probably a really nice sport for doodles as its intended to both physically and mentally stimulate the dog. Here's a video on youtube:
here's the wiki link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Treibball
You can see the connection to "herding" especially in the video above with the Border Collie. Kind of cool...
We just got BB an 8 inch Jolly Ball without a handle (bounce-n-play) and he can just barely pick it up, instead he just rolls around it. I am thinking it would be fun to teach him to try to roll it into a goal. As its not really a "retrieving" game when we throw it... but its very cute, and he loves it!

I have seen this before on the internet and they used exercise balls...I bet you could find some used ones at a used sporting goods store. We have a store here called Play it Again Sports. I think I might have to check it out...
Exercise balls was my first thought, too, the ball I linked to is intended for use for horses. Reviews say it is thicker and more durable quality than the exercise balls. My exercise ball is hidden from BB, its fairly thin, and BB I know for sure will "go for the kill" (as in, bite it). IF one has a dog that plays with it "properly" like the dog in the video (i.e., without teeth!), the exercise ball should do fine, and is likely much cheaper. :-]
Carla,
Just came home and used your Wiki link. I found an organization that is 32 miles from my house.

That is so exciting, but $700 is INSANE! Can you go and watch an event sometime or something? I'm just getting started doing agility, so DH and I watched an event and it was fascinating and fun, even though we didn't participate... Still, that is a crazy amount of money...
How far are you from the PA border? My parents live near Pittsburgh. I think BB and Spud would be good buddies if they met!
We are 2hours, 20 minutes from Pittsburgh :)
I think they would love each other. Maybe this Spring, you can go to Stow Swim Dog Park????
Pebbles is BEAUTIFUL!
Nice picture :) I want one without a handle. Actually, I am in the process of ordering right now.
Peebles, you are not far from me. We all should get together real soon
This is alot cheaper and easier than keeping sheep in the back yard!
hehe, ;-] I wish I could "like" this ;-]
